  • Two home furnishing rivals in legal battle over trade secrets

    Restoration Hardware has filed a lawsuit against Crate and Barrel, accusing the rival brand of stealing confidential information to gain a competitive edge.   Restoration Hardware claims Crate and Barrel implemented a similar strategy that features food and beverage services at certain gallery locations.   
  • Canadian home improvement chain is growing its workforce

    Preparing for its busy season, Lowe’s Canada will fill 2,800 positions during the first half of 2017.  
  • New Sam’s Club CEO sets forth three goals on day one

    John Furner, who began his new role as president and CEO of Sam’s Club Wednesday, will focus on three big areas: people, product and digital.   Regarding people: “We need to engage everyone, at all levels of the company, in the fight we’re in. We need to put our members first and have everyone pulling in the same direction,” Furner stated in a blogged interview currently on Walmart’s website.  
  • Walmart to give new employees pay increases sooner

    The labor market for workers appears to be improving.   Walmart confirmed to media outlets it will speed up the time it takes for new employees to complete a training program and subsequently increase their pay.   The retail two years ago implemented a $9 per-hour minimum wage and last year unveiled a six-month training program called Pathways. Once this program was completed, pay was increased to $10 per hour.  
  • Mid-America names Minnesota property management chief

    Alan Young has been named senior VP of Property Management in Minnesota by Mid-America Real Estate. He joined the company’s third-party management operation in 2011.   Young spent nearly six years at GGP earlier in his career, managing a portfolio of 10 regional shopping centers generating more than $100 million in net income. He rose to VP and group director at the company before joining Mid-America as a senior property manager.   Young was named a partner in Mid-America last year.

    Chain Store Age has launched our annual search for 10 individuals in retail real estate we call “retail stars;” all will be featured in the May 2017 issue of CSA with bonus distribution at the International Council of Shopping Centers’ RECon event in Las Vegas!     The award recognizes people under the age of 40 who are making an impact in retail real estate – whether from the tenant (retail) or the landlord (shopping center company) side.
