  • Starbucks Does Vegas

    Starbucks is giving customers a front-row seat on the famed Las Vegas Strip.

    The coffee giant has opened a 3,200-sq.-ft. location in Grand Bazaar Shops at Bally’s Casino complex. The store is unusual in that, instead of the typical tables with chairs, it offers theatrical stadium seating (for 30 to 40 people) in the center of the store and surrounding bench seating.

  • Hamilton Quarter a new 320 acre mixed-use development project announced

    Columbus, Ohio -- CASTO, The Daimler Group and The New Albany Company announced a joint venture to develop a large scale, mixed-use property, comprising 320 acres located in Columbus, Ohio at State Route 161 and Hamilton Road interchange.

    Hamilton Quarter when completed will include over 700,000 sq. ft. of office space, 1 million sq. ft. of retail, restaurant, and entertainment space, up to 800 multi-family units, and 130 senior living units, as well as hospitality and other destination oriented venues.

  • Longtime Starbucks executive takes permanent coffee break

    Starbucks Corp. has lost one of its veteran executives.

    The coffee giant revealed in a regulatory filing that former COO Troy Alstead will not return to the company following a year-long unpaid leave. Alstead, whose resignation was effective February 29, 2016, had long been seen as the company’s number two executive and an eventual replacement to current CEO Howard Schultz.

    A new form of wage theft has recently been identified, where employers misclassify employees’ schedules in order to shift the business expenses associated with scheduling to the employee. Illegal misclassification schemes have been around for decades. A common example is an employer misclassifying an employee’s job title, so that the employee is a salaried employee, in order to avoid paying the employee overtime. Here, the employers are misclassifying the employee’s schedules, instead of the employee’s job title, to avoid paying reporting time premiums.

  • Mobile POS market shows growth

    The number of installed mobile POS units is growing rapidly.

    Mobile POS devices surpassed 6 million units worldwide by the end of 2015, according to new research from IHL Group. The number of installed units grew by 64% during the year.

    The vast majority of these units are being used in retailers below 50 stores in their chain. However, IHL reports it is beginning to see an uptick in enterprise mobile POS retail accounts.
