  • Dollar General to offer prepaid cards from Western Union

    ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Dollar General will now offer Westerm Union branded  general-purpose reloadable (GPR) prepaid cards at Dollar General’s more than 10,000 stores in 40 states.

    Englewood, Colo. -- The Western Union Co. and Dollar General Corp. said that they have executed an agreement to begin offering two Western Union general-purpose reloadable prepaid cards at Dollar General’s more than 10,000 stores in 40 states.

    Dollar General is now offering the Western Union MoneyWise and co-branded Western Union Telemundo cards.

    Purchase, N.Y. -- June spending at small retailers increased 8% in 2012 compared to June 2011, higher than the overall U.S. retail growth rate of 6.9%, according to a new SpendingPulse report issued by MasterCard Advisors in partnership with Wells Fargo. The same report also found that sales growth at small retailers has now outperformed growth of overall retail sales for nine consecutive months, since October 2011.  

  • Books-A-Million announces withdrawal of acquisition proposal

    Birmingham, Ala. -- Books-A-Million said its largest shareholder group, the Anderson family, has withdrawn its non-binding offer to take the company private.

    The Anderson family, which owns a 53% stake in the chain, had offered $3.05 per share in cash to take the company private in April.

    “After discussing the proposal with the special committee of the company’s board of directors and its advisers, the Anderson family has decided not to pursue the proposed acquisition at this time,” the company said in a statement.

  • New Kmart card offers alternative to traditional banking

    HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. — Kmart became one of the first retailers to offer a reloadable prepaid card requiring no initial charge to load funds with the launch of its new Halogen Reloadable Prepaid MasterCard offered by Green Dot. In addition to the no charge for loading funds, the card offers free ATM withdrawals from network ATMs, and is available with no bank account, credit check or minimum balance required.

  • New competition for the unbanked

    Kmart shoppers can avoid a $3.95 activation fee when they sign up online for the retailer’s new reloadable, prepaid MasterCard, but those who do so will need to remain vigilant to avoid other fees.
