Kohl’s closing 27 stores and a fulfillment center — here’s where

Kohl’s Corp., which will welcome a new chief executive on Jan. 15, is making select real estate changes.

The department store retailer, which operates more than 1,150 locations nationwide, said it plans to close 27 underperforming stores (locations at end of article) by April 2025. It also will shutter its e-commerce fulfillment center in San Bernardino, Calif. when the lease on the facility expires in May.

The San Bernardino center, which has been in operation since 2010, is one of 15 such facilities in Kohl's supply chain network. Kohl's said that it has increased efficiencies with new technology capabilities at newer facilities in recent years and also expanded its ability to fulfill customer orders from store locations, allowing the company to maintain its ability to fulfill orders without the San Bernardino facility.

With regard to the store closings, Kohl’s said it continues to believe in the health and strength of its profitable store base, these specific locations were underperforming stores. 

"We always take these decisions very seriously," said CEO Tom Kingsbury, who will step down as CEO on Jan. 15, succeeded by Ashley Buchanan, CEO of Michaels Cos. "As we continue to build on our long-term growth strategy, it is important that we also take difficult but necessary actions to support the health and future of our business for our customers and our teams."
