Kilwins operate nearly 200 shops nationwide, with more in development.

Chocolate and ice cream franchise Kilwins is plotting its entry into a new state in the Mountain West region.

The Michigan-based company has identified Utah as a priority market for expansion. A spokesperson confirmed to Chain Store Age that Kilwins is targeting at least five locations in the Beehive State over the next few years.

"The wonderful state of Utah brings together a growing population, strong visitor traffic and an active retail environment, along with a strong appreciation for premium sweet treat experiences, making it a terrific place for Kilwins," said Brian Britton, president and CEO of Kilwins.

The Utah expansion comes as Kilwins introduces Kilwins Select, a “lighter asset” franchise model designed to complement the brand's traditional full-line stores and create new opportunities in high-traffic retail environments. Featuring a 600-sq.-ft. footprint, simplified build-out and curated product assortment, the company says Kilwins Select lowers barriers to entry while maintaining the “craftsmanship, hospitality and experiential elements that have defined the brand for generations.”

"Kilwins Select gives us another way to thoughtfully expand the brand into markets where we see significant potential," said Kelli Schroeder, chief development officer of Kilwins. "The smaller footprint and greater real estate flexibility create new possibilities for franchisees to develop multiple locations while still delivering the quality, hospitality and memorable guest experience that consumers expect from Kilwins."

Utah is one of multiple markets Kilwins is plotting expansion in. At the beginning of the year, the brand announced plans to open more than 20 locations in Arizona over the next three to five years, marking its debut in the Grand Canyon State. Last summer, Kilwins said it planned to expand its footprint in Texas with 10 new stores.

Founded in 1947, Kilwins operates nearly 200 locations nationwide. The chain is known for its hand-crafted chocolates and fudge, premium ice cream and more.
