Millennial holiday shoppers are most interested in AI.
A new survey reveals how many holiday shoppers overall would consider using artificial intelligence (AI) — and as well as which generation is most open to the technology.
More than half (52%) of respondents would consider leveraging AI-powered platforms to help find holiday gifts, according to the online survey of 1,000 U.S. consumers 18 and up from online resale marketplace Mercari and Wakefield Research. A slightly lower percentage (47%) of respondents say they would consider employing AI-powered platforms to help them think of holiday gifts they otherwise would not think of.
Younger holiday shoppers are most open to receiving assistance from AI, with 71% of millennial respondents and 55% of Gen Z respondents willing to consider utilizing AI-powered platforms to find holiday gifts.
Other key survey findings include:
- Three in four respondents spend more than a month (or more than 720
hours) searching for the “perfect present.” - Almost 9 in 10 respondents (88%) would consider shopping secondhand instead of purchasing new this year. The top reasons include finding items not available anywhere else (47%), locating hard-to-find items from childhood (43%), and finding classic items that never go out of style (42%).
- Close to eight in 10 respondents (78%) feel stressed about finding holiday
gifts this year
Shopkick survey shows lower interest in AI for holiday shopping
Interestingly, a recent survey of nearly 10,000 U.S. consumers from shopping rewards app Shopkick indicates only 7% of respondents are planning on using AI tools for holiday shopping.
More than half (52%) of respondents don’t want to use AI to assist them in holiday shopping and 27% don’t know how to use it. In addition, 14% have never heard of the technology and 5% are afraid of it.
Of the 7% of survey respondents that are planning on using AI to shop this holiday season, the majority will use a text generation tool (like ChatGPT ) for gift planning/inspiration (57%), meal planning and recipe ideation (46%) and holiday card creation (38%).
