eBay rolls out Klarna flexible payments in U.S.
eBay is bringing a new payment option to U.S. customers.
The e-commerce retailer, which has more than 2.3 billion live listings and is one of the world’s largest online marketplaces, is expanding a global partnership with AI-based payments and commerce network Klarna to the U.S. market.
Since launching Klarna flexible payments in the U.K., Austria, France, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain in December 2024, eBay has enabled shoppers in those markets to split up payments for higher-ticket items, such as used luxury watches. Electronics, fashion, and collectibles are some of the most popular categories where eBay shoppers have been paying with Klarna.
Shoppers can now pay for eligible eBay purchases in the U.S. using Klarna’s flexible payments options including Pay in 4, which allows customers to split their purchase into four interest-free payments, as well as financing, which offers flexible payment plans for larger purchases.
"eBay is where people come to shop with purpose — whether they’re looking for value, rare finds, or sustainable options such as a refurbished camera, hard-to-find car part, or a vintage handbag," said Avritti Khandurie Mittal, VP & GM of global payments and financial services at eBay. "We are thrilled to expand our global strategic partnership with Klarna to the U.S. We’ve been very pleased with the positive customer and business impact Klarna has delivered in some of our key markets including the U.K. and Europe."
Klarna also recently rolled out its resell feature to U.S. shoppers who use eBay. With a few taps, users can list past Klarna purchases on eBay with pre-filled descriptions and images. Since launching in December 2024, there have been more than 500,000 eBay listings generated through Klarna’s app.
"eBay is one of the world’s largest and most dynamic marketplaces, offering everything from the everyday to the extraordinary," said David Sykes, chief commercial officer at Klarna. "We look forward to expanding our partnership to give millions of U.S. shoppers greater flexibility to purchase what they love—from rare collectibles to that vintage coat they’ve been eyeing—whenever, however, and in smarter, more personalized ways."
eBay focuses on U.S. payments
eBay made some significant changes to the payment types it accepts in the U.S. 2024, including integrating the Venmo digital payment platform.
As a result, buyers can pay for purchases with their Venmo balance or a bank account, debit or credit card linked to their Venmo account. Once buyers have linked their Venmo account to their eBay account, they can go through checkout without manually entering their payment details in subsequent transactions.
Sellers don’t need to do anything on their account to offer Venmo as a payment method. Meanwhile, in August 2024 eBay stopped accepting American Express cards as a payment option in the U.S.
