Dollar General takes on Amazon with same-day rural delivery
Dollar General is competing with one of the world’s largest retailers for the delivery business of rural U.S. consumers.
The discount retailer is expanding the reach of its proprietary myDG Delivery same-day delivery service available via its app and website to more than 17,000 stores, many located in rural communities.
This move follows Amazon’s more than $4 billion effort in 2025 to expand its rural U.S. delivery network in order to speed up delivery for millions of customers living in less densely populated areas. Amazon now offers free same-day and next-day delivery in more than 1,000 smaller cities, towns and rural communities.

According to Amazon, this investment includes growing its rural delivery network’s footprint to more than 200 delivery stations, which support the last mile of its order process and help speed up deliveries for customers.
Meanwhile, with Dollar General data indicating that approximately 75% of the U.S. population lives within five miles of one of its stores, the company is positioning its stores to support same‑day delivery in underserved rural communities.
“myDG Delivery is helping bridge the digital gap by extending same‑day delivery to rural communities nationwide,” said Lydia Thacher, VP of digital commerce at Dollar General. “We are proud to offer a service that not only brings convenience to our existing customers but also introduces new customers to the Dollar General brand through a frictionless digital experience.”
Dollar General also provides same-day delivery from more than 18,000 stores in partnership with DoorDash and from more than 17,000 stores in a recently launched collaboration with Uber Eats.
Through Saturday, Feb. 28, 2026, Dollar General will provide customers with free delivery on one myDG Delivery order using their myDG rewards account. Customers may opt to expedite their order to one hour or less for an additional $1 fee.
As of Oct. 31, 2025, Goddlettsville, Tenn.-based Dollar General Corp. operates 20,901 Dollar General, DG Market, DGX and pOpshelf stores across the U.S. and Mi Súper Dollar General stores in Mexico.
