Dollar General is making same-day, online delivery available from more than 9,000 stores.
The discount retailer is partnering with on-demand logistics platform DoorDash to offer on-demand delivery of household essential items, including food, snacks, and cleaning supplies, at its regular everyday prices. Dollar General customers can browse and order products for same-day delivery (in under an hour on average) through the DoorDash marketplace app or website, with no time slot or minimum order size required.
On-demand delivery from DoorDash is currently available from more than 9,000 Dollar General stores with plans to expand to more than 10,000 locations by December 2021. Dollar General and DoorDash initially piloted a program in summer 2021 with approximately 600 stores in rural and metropolitan communities.
Dollar General is branching out into same-day delivery as it undergoes an aggressive growth strategy. The retailer is on track to open 1,050 stores in fiscal 2021, including its first-ever store in Idaho. The company is also planning to undertake 1,750 store remodels and 100 store relocations. As of July 2021, Dollar General operated more than 17,600 stores, with approximately 75% of the U.S. population currently residing within five miles of a Dollar General store.
Meanwhile, one of Dollar General’s chief competitors, Dollar Tree, recently expanded a similar same-day online delivery program in collaboration with Instacart. Dollar Tree is widening the reach of its existing partnership with Instacart to offer same-day delivery in as fast as one hour in 48 states and Washington, D.C.
Dollar Tree first teamed up with Instacart to launch same-day online delivery services from its Family Dollar banner in November 2020. Its same-day delivery assortment includes Dollar Tree's and Family Dollar's selection of household goods and seasonal decor, pantry and baby essentials, office, party and school supplies, personal care items and more.
“At Dollar General, we strive to make shopping hassle-free and affordable, and our partnership with DoorDash reiterates our commitment to provide convenient and contactless options,” said Emily Taylor, Dollar General executive VP and chief merchandising officer. “We look forward to providing both existing and new customers with an even faster and more convenient way to experience all that Dollar General has to offer.”
“Our platform was designed to connect consumers to their communities, providing increased access to food, everyday essentials, and other local goods,” said Tom Pickett, chief revenue officer at DoorDash. “We are thrilled to partner with Dollar General to provide customers across the country with convenient access to the everyday essentials they need at the affordable price points they have come to trust. With this partnership, we are proud to expand our services to areas that traditionally have not had access to same-day delivery.”
Dollar General operated 17,683 stores in 46 states as of July 30, 2021. DoorDash operates in more than 7,000 cities across the U.S., Canada, Australia, and Japan.
