Dick’s Sporting Goods cutting seasonal hires 40%
Dick’s Sporting Goods is returning its seasonal staffing to pre-2025 levels.
Dick’s expects to hire approximately 8,400 seasonal associates across its Dick’s Sporting Goods, Dick’s House of Sport, Going Going Gone! and Public Lands store locations for the upcoming holiday season. The retailer is hosting its ninth annual "National Signing Day" on Wednesday, Oct. 21. Interested candidates can interview on-site and meet store management at participating locations. Hiring will continue until positions are filled.
This represents a 40% reduction from the approximately 14,000 seasonal workers Dick’s hired for the 2025 holiday season, which was a significant increase from 2024, when it hired about 8,000 temporary holiday workers, which was a decrease from 8,600 in 2023.

"Our stores truly come alive during the holidays, and seasonal teammates bring the passion and team spirit that make shopping with us so special," said Julie Lodge-Jarrett, executive VP, chief people, purpose and transformation officer at Dick’s. "Whether it's helping a parent pick out a first baseball glove or equipping a young athlete for the winter season, our store teams play a huge role in creating holiday memories."
The Foot Locker division of Dick’s will hire approximately 2,900 seasonal associates across its Foot Locker, Kids Foot Locker, WSS and Champs Sports store locations in North America this holiday season. This is also close to a 40% reduction from the 4,750 seasonal associates hired by Foot Locker in 2025.
"At Foot Locker, our stores are where sneaker culture comes to life," said Michael Keinath, senior VP, chief people officer at Foot Locker North America. "We're excited to welcome new teammates who are passionate about sport, sneakers and culture, enjoy connecting with customers and want to be part of an energetic team during the holiday season."
After 30 days of employment, associates will have access to Dick’s 401(k) plan. Seasonal workers across the company will receive hourly pay and associate discounts across participating brands. Candidates can also search for seasonal job openings on the Dick’s website and apply online via the Foot Locker website.
Dick’s to close physical locations Thanksgiving Day
As in previous years, all Dick’s Sporting Goods stores and distribution centers in the U.S. will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26, to allow employees to spend time with family. Customers can continue to shop online throughout Thanksgiving Day at the Dick’s and Foot Locker e-commerce sites. Retail locations will reopen on Black Friday, Nov. 27.
Seasonal hiring trends downward
Dick's is part of what appears to be a broader trend of retailers hiring fewer seasonal associates than in the 2025 holiday season. Seasonal retail hiring is expected to fall below last year’s level to 450,000 jobs added during the fourth quarter of the year, according to a prediction from Challenger, Gray & Christmas. In September, Michaels said it plans to hire more than 10,000 seasonal team members, which is flat with last year.
Founded in 1948 and headquartered in Pittsburgh, Dick’s banners include Dick’s Sporting Goods, Golf Galaxy, Public Lands, Going Going Gone!, Dick’s House of Sport, and Golf Galaxy Performance Center. As owner and operator of the Foot Locker business, the company also runs the Foot Locker, Kids Foot Locker, Champs Sports, WSS, and Atmos banners.
