  • Safeway makes website more accessible for visually impaired

    Pleasanton, Calif. -- Safeway has made its online grocery shopping website more accessible and usable for Safeway shoppers with visual impairments.

    Safeway collaborated with its visually impaired customers to make the necessary changes to its website. As such, the company has adopted the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 2.0 level AA as its accessibility standard.

  • CBRE completes sale of Kohl’s in Avondale, Ariz.

    Phoenix — CBRE has completed the sale of a single tenant net leased Kohl’s department store at the Alameda Crossing shopping center in Avondale, Ariz. The 88,402-sq.-ft. retail property on 8.89 acres commanded a price of $10.6 million.

    CBRE’s Phoenix office represented both the buy and the seller in the transaction. The seller was La Jolla, Calif.-based Collins Family Trust, Stanford Decedents Trust and Sarn Family Trust. The buyer was Investors Associated LLP of Oconomowoc, Wis.

  • Walgreens takes preventive health care services to Maryland

    Walgreens is further expanding the scope of preventative health care services provided by its pharmacists and now offering daily testing for cholesterol, blood glucose and body composition at more than 60 stores in Maryland. 

    Each test also includes a free blood pressure reading and personal consultation with a Walgreens pharmacist.

  • Walgreen first-quarter sales jump 6%

    Deerfield, Ill. -- Walgreen Co. said Wednesday that sales for the first quarter rose 6% to $18.35 billion, from $17.32 billion in the same quarter a year earlier.  

    Same-store sales increased 5.5% for the quarter. November sales totaled $6.07 billion, up 4.1% from $5.83 billion a year earlier.

    The retailer attributed sales spikes to increased investment in promotional strategies.

  • Walgreens opens net-zero energy retail store

    Sporting two wind turbines, nearly 850 solar panels and a geothermal system burrowed 550 ft. into the ground, Walgreens celebrated the official opening of what the retailer believes to be the nation’s first net-zero energy retail store, anticipated to produce energy equal to or greater than it consumes.

  • Walgreens strengthens new digital and marketing division

    Walgreens has named Sona Chawla, currently president of e-commerce, as president of digital and chief marketing officer. In this new role, Chawla will lead a newly created digital and marketing division, establishing an integrated digital, enterprise-wide marketing and customer loyalty and insights group to advance Walgreens “Well Experience” strategy.

  • Walgreens opens nation’s first net zero energy store

    Evanston, Ill. -- Walgreens on Thursday opened what is believed to be the nation’s first net zero energy retail store (a net zero building produces energy equal to or greater than it consumes). Located in Evanston, Ill., the store features two wind turbines, nearly 850 solar panels and a geothermal system burrowed 550 ft. into the ground. Engineering estimates indicate that the new Walgreens will use 200,000 kilowatt hours per year of electricity while generating 220,000 kilowatt hours per year.
