  • Safeway profit slips in Q2; on track to open 10 Lifestyle stores in 2012

    Pleasanton, Calif. -- Safeway Inc. reported Thursday that profit for the second quarter dropped to $121.7 million from $146 million in the same period last year.

    Sales inched up 1.9% to $10.4 billion, and same-store sales rose 0.8%.

    For the year, Safeway said it expects to invest $900 million in capital expenditures to open approximately 10 new Lifestyle stores, complete 10 Lifestyle remodels, refurbish in-store pharmacies and develop properties through its Property Development Centers subsidiary.

    New York -- Safeway’s store in Bozeman, Mont., was recently awarded LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Silver certification by the U.S. Green Building Council.   • Giant-Carlisle completes acquisition of Genuardi's stores in Philadelphia

    AMSTERDAM — A division of Ahold USA has completed its acquisition of stores in the greater Philadelphia area.

    Giant-Carlisle officially closed its acquisition of 15 Genuardi's stores, a subsidiary of Safeway. The deal was previously announced in January and was approved by the Federal Trade Commission last month.

    As previously reported, during the conversion process, five stores at a time will temporarily close for about a week. The three-phase staggered approach is expected to be completed on July 22.

    Carlisle, Pa. -- Ahold subsidiary Giant Food said it has commenced its conversion of 15 former Genuardi's stores. The announcement follows FTC approval of Giant Food’s plan to acquire 15 Genuardi's stores, located in the greater Philadelphia area, from Safeway.

    During the conversion process, five stores at a time will temporarily close for about a week. The three-phase staggered approach is expected to be completed on July 22.

    CARLISLE, Pa. — Giant Food has commenced its conversion of 15 former Genuardi's stores.

    The announcement follows Giant Food, an Ahold subsidiary, getting the green light from the Federal Trade Commission for its plan to acquire 15 Genuardi's stores, located in the greater Philadelphia area, from Safeway.
