  • Report: FTC preparing to block Walgreen’s acquisition of Rite Aid

    A new report suggests that Walgreens Boots Alliance’s acquisition of Rite Aid may be in jeopardy.    The Capital Forum reported that the Federal Trade Commission's staff are prepared to recommend that the agency file a lawsuit to stop the deal, according to Reuters. A source close to the deal told Reuters that FTC staff has asked companies and groups concerned about the deal for depositions and affidavits that could be used in a lawsuit aimed at stopping it.

    Walgreens Boots Alliance has set in motion a mechanism that will result in the Federal Trade Commission having  60 days to either clear its $9.7 billion acquisition of Rite Aid or sue to block it,   Walgreens and Rite Aid Corp. announced late Monday afternoon that they have “certified substantial compliance” with the second request from the FTC regarding their proposed merger.

    The battle for Walgreens to acquire Rite Aid may be entering its final stage.     Walgreens is expected to certify compliance within days, giving the Federal Trade Commission 90 days to either clear the $9.7 billion deal or sue to block it, reported the New York Post. The newspaper added the certified compliance period would expire roughly the same day as the Walgreens-Rite Aid merger agreement terminates on July 31. The proposed transaction was first announced in October 2015.  
  • Despite merger uncertainly, Rite Aid beats Street in Q4

    Rite Aid managed to best analyst forecasts for the fourth quarter even as its chairman and CEO noted that "the extended duration of the merger process" with Walgreens Boots Alliance is "having a negative impact" on the company's results.    Rite Aid’s revenue rose a better-than-expected 2.7% to $8.5 billion in the quarter. Same-store sales fell 3.0%, consisting of a 4.3% decrease in pharmacy sales and a 0.3% decrease in front-end sales.  
  • Regional drug chain chief exec resigns

    Bartel Drugs is on the hunt for a new CEO.   Brian Unmacht resigned his post two weeks ago after two years on the job, senior communications manager Ric Brewer confirmed to Drug Store News.   “He left Bartells two-weeks ago to pursue professional and personal goals that he has,” Brewer said. “Our Executive Team is now running day-to-day operations until the search for a new CEO begins.”  
  • Report: Fred’s could receive cash infusion to help purchase Rite Aid stores

    Fred’s plan to purchase at least 865 divested Rite Aid stores may be getting a step closer to becoming a reality.    More than one prominent investor has recently approached Fred’s Pharmacy with the intention of investing money in the operator of 601 locations in 16 states, according to the New York Post.
