Nordstrom reported better-than-expected fourth profit but missed analysts’ sales estimates amid an “unexpected” slowdown in traffic at its full-priced stores during and after the holidays.

Nordstrom reported a 31% gain in first quarter net profit that topped Street expectations but its same-store sales disappointed.

Nordstrom Inc. swung to a profit in its third quarter and topped expectations, but its same-store sales fell as hurricanes affected store traffic in Puerto Rico, Florida, and Texas.

Nordstrom has opened its sixth location in Canada.    The department store retailer on Friday opened its doors at CF Sherway Gardens, its third full-line location in Toronto. The two-level, 140,000-sq.-ft. store follows the retailer's openings at Toronto's CF Toronto Eaton Centre and Yorkdale Shopping Centre last fall. Nordstrom on Thursday reported positive results for its second quarter amid ongoing discussions of a possible buyout.   The upscale department store retailer reported that total net sales increased 3.5% to $3.79 billion in the quarter ended July 29, compared to a forecast for $3.75 billion. Total company same-store sales rose 1.7%, also better than expected.
