  • Another apparel retailer sounds cautious note on holiday

    Express reported a drop in third-quarter profit and slashed its full-year adjusted earnings outlook, warning that the holiday season will "remain challenging."   In recent days, an array of apparel retailers have expressed caution about the holiday selling season, including Gap, Abercrombie & Fitch  and American Eagle Outfitters.    Express earned $11.6 million, 15 cents per share, for the quarter ended Oct. 29, down from $26.3 million, or 31 cents per share, a year earlier.

    It’s a rough time for many teen apparel retailers and the holiday season may not bring much relief.   American Eagle Outfitters Inc. on Wednesday issued a weaker than expected forecast for the fourth quarter as its CEO cited a “tough” retail environment. Its warnings issues similar statements from the likes of Abercrombie & Fitch and Gap.    
  • American Eagle Outfitters soars in Q2

    American Eagle Outfitters’ profit, revenue and same-store sales increased in the second quarter, with its results topping expectations.   The chain posted a profit of $41.6 million for the quarter, up 25% from $33.3 million in the year-ago quarter.   Total net revenue increased 3% to $823 million, from $797 million in the year-ago period.   Consolidated same-store sales increased 3%.

  • Toys ‘R’ Us names AEO exec as global tech head

    Toys “R” Us Inc. is creating a new position of CTO and turning to a veteran of American Eagle Outfitters (AEO) to fill it.
     
    Lance Wills will join Toys “R” Us as executive VP, global CTO effective June 13. He will report directly to chairman and CEO Dave Brandon. In his newly created role, Wills will oversee global and IT digital strategy, including governance and infrastructure.
     

  • American Eagle Outfitters taps Kate Spade exec to head up marketing

    American Eagle Outfitters announced that Kyle Andrew has been appointed executive VP, chief marketing officer, effective June 6.   Andrew served as senior VP, brand director for Kate Spade Saturday from 2013 through 2015. She joined the company in 2008 as head of global brand marketing and played an integral role in the re-positioning of the Kate Spade brand from a $100 million handbag company to a billion dollar global lifestyle brand.

    Not all teen apparel retailers are struggling. Just ask American Eagle Outfitters.

    The company reported a better-than-expected rise in quarterly sales and profit as demand for its products rose even amid a sluggish retail environment.

    American Eagle’s net income surged 39.3% to $40.5 million, or 22 cents per share, in the quarter ended April 30.

    Net revenue increased 7% to $749.4 million. Same-store sales increased 6%, on top of a 7% increase in the year-ago period.
