    Brussels, Belgium – Delhaize Group has released its 2014 Sustainability Report. Among the sustainability achievements in 2014 across the organization were: obtaining 35% of Delhaize America private brand food sales from products with high nutritional value up from 33% in 2013.

  • Delhaize, Ahold in preliminary talks about blockbuster merger

    Brussels, Belgium – Belgian grocery retailer Delhaize Group and Dutch grocery retailer Ahold N.V. have confirmed they are engaged in preliminary discussions about a possible merger that could create one of the largest supermarket operators in the U.S. But the two companies said the talks may not result in any deal.

    Batavia, Ill. – Aldi Inc. has completed its purchase of 66 Bottom Dollar Food stores from the Delhaize Group. The transaction includes the land, buildings and leasehold improvements associated with Delhaize's recently retired Bottom Dollar Food operation.

  • Aldi accelerating expansion with Bottom Dollar

    Aldi's pace of growth is about to quicken now that its acquisition of Delhaize Group's Bottom Dollar Food store locations is complete.

    The retailer announced it has completed its purchase of 66 real estate assets from the Delhaize Group. The transaction includes the land, buildings and leasehold improvements associated with Delhaize's recently retired Bottom Dollar Food operation.

  • Giant Eagle exits discount grocery; closing Good Cents Grocery + More

    New York -- These are tough times for discount grocery stores — unless the company happens to be the fast-growing Aldi. Pittsburgh-based supermarket operator Giant Eagle plans to close all eight of its Good Cents Grocery + More stores. The closures are set for March 26.

  • Delhaize Group Q4 sales beat estimates

    An extra week of sales and accelerating food inflation helped Delhaize Group, the owner of Food Lion stores, post profits that beat analyst estimates.

    The company reported that fourth quarter U.S. revenues were $5.23 billion, a 12% increase from $4.67 billion the same period a year earlier. Same-store sales rose 3.6% in the U.S., but fell 6.9% in Belgium and 2.2% in Southeastern Europe.

  • U.S. performance buoys Delhaize revenue in Q4

    Brussels, Belgium – The addition of a 53rd week in fiscal 2014 for its U.S. operations helped global grocery conglomerate Delhaize Group make up for disappointing results from its Belgium stores. Including the extra week and benefiting from retail inflation, fourth quarter U.S. revenues were $5.23 billion, a 12% increase from $4.67 billion the same period a year earlier.

  • Stop & Shop honored with LEED Silver for three stores in Massachusetts

    Quincy, Mass. -- The Super Stop & Shop stores in Hyannis, Hyde Park and Wayland, Massachusetts have each received LEED (Leadership in Energy and Efficient Design) silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. (Stop & Shop has 13 superstores, which are LEED certified.)
