  • Consumers to spend (almost) as much on dad

    WASHINGTON — While dads usually don't get the same caliber of gift for Father's Day as moms do or Mother's Day, if the results of NRF's latest survey are to be believed, dads should be pretty pleased with what they receive this year.

  • Father’s Day spending set to rise

    Washington, D.C. -- The average person will spend $117.14 on dad’s gifts this year, up 10% from $106.49 last year, closing the gap between its biggest competitor: Mother’s Day (consumers planned to spend an average of $152 on the holiday), according to the National Retail Federation’s 2012 Father’s Day spending survey, conducted by BIGinsight. Total spending for Father’s Day is expected to reach $12.7 billion.

  • Pier 1 Q1 same-store sales up 7.2%

    FORT WORTH, Texas -- Pier 1 reported that same-store sales rose 7.2% in the first quarter, helped by strong holiday assortments. First-quarter revenue was up 8% to $361 million, beating Wall Street's estimate of $360.7 million.

    President and CEO Alex Smith said Thursday that the shoppers have been buying the retailer's Easter, spring, Mother's Day and Memorial Day products.

  • Report: J.C. Penney to add more promotions

    New York -- J.C. Penney appears to be relenting a bit on the strict non-promotional strategy launched by CEO Ron Johnson.

    In a report on CNBC.com, Deutsche Bank analyst Charles Grom said the chain has added five "Best Price Friday" events to its calendar. The first took place the Friday of Memorial Day weekend, and another is scheduled for Black Friday in November. Others may occur at peak sales times, according to Grom.

  • CBL, Horizon break ground on second phase of Outlet Shoppes at Oklahoma City

    Chattanooga, Tenn. -- CBL & Associates Properties and Horizon Group Properties said Tuesday that construction will begin immediately on the second phase of The Outlet Shoppes at Oklahoma City.

    The 28,000-sq.-ft. expansion is scheduled to open in November and will bring Columbia Sports, Ann Taylor Loft, Waterford, Kenneth Cole, Lucky Brand and more to the center.

  • Industry Trends: C-store traffic up in first quarter

    New York -- The mild winter weather across much of the country helped to offset the negative impact that rising gas prices traditionally have on convenience store visits, according to The NPD Group. NPD’s Convenience Store Monitor reports that in the first calendar quarter of 2012 compared with same quarter a year ago, c-store traffic increased by five percentage points from a year ago quarter and by six percentage points at major oil chain c-stores.

  • Online retail sales up 6% in March

    Armonk, N.Y. -- A report released Tuesday by IBM found that the U.S. online retail sector grew more than 6% in March 2012. This upswing in March closes a quarter in which online sales were down slightly from the same period in 2011.

  • Party City to open new Manhattan location

    New York – Dallas-based SRS Real Estate Partners said it has negotiated an 11,825-sq.-ft. lease on behalf of Party City for a new store in the Penn Plaza district of Manhattan.

    The store, at 223 West 34th St., is scheduled to open in second quarter 2012. This will be the party goods retailer’s second location in Manhattan.
