  • NRF: back-to-school spending to reach $75.8 billion

    With back-to-school spending on a “stock up” cycle rather than a “make do” cycle, total spending for K-12 and college school supplies is expected to reach $75.8 billion, up from last year’s $68 billion, according to the National Retail Federation’s annual survey conducted by Prosper Insights and Analytics.

    Parents making back-to-school purchases are willing to open their wallets, if the price is right.   That’s according to a new study from digital savings platform RetailMeNot Inc., "Back-to-School Cheat Sheet: Consumer Trends and Insights for Retailers," back-to-school shoppers plan to spend an average of $273 per child, up from their anticipated spending of $246 in 2015.  
  • Burlington Stores sees Q2 heating up

    Burlington Stores Inc. is upping its guidance for several key fiscal metrics in the second quarter of fiscal 2016.   The retailer now expects second quarter adjusted net income per share to total $0.28 to $.30, up from a previously announced range of $0.20-$0.23 per share and compared to $0.19 in the same period the previous year. Burlington Stores also currently anticipates adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) in the range of $88 to $90 million, compared to the prior year figure of $75.4 million.
  • Study: Customers display cost-consciousness

    Consumers who purchase at off-price retail outlets are a growing group.   According to the latest Checkout Tracking data from global information company The NPD Group, two-thirds of all consumers shop at off-price retailers. Checkout Tracking analysis, which analyzes receipts and follows consumer purchasing behavior, also shows off-price buyers represent 75% of apparel purchases across all retail channels.  
  • June retail sales get warmer

    U.S. retailers ended spring with a small but notable improvement in financial performance.   According to new data from the U.S. Census Bureau, adjusted advance estimates of U.S. retail and food services sales for June were $457 billion. This represents an increase of 0.6% from the previous month, and 2.7% higher than June 2015.  
  • Survey: Stores help drive healthy back-to-school spending

    Consumers are not skimping on back-to-school spending this year, and brick-and-mortar retailers have extra reason to celebrate.   The International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) has released its annual back-to-school consumer survey results, finding an overall uptick in spending. The average back-to-school (BTS) shopper is expected to spend $657, with 78% expecting to spend more than the prior year.
