  • Sawgrass Mills to break ground on expansion

    Sunrise, Fla. -- Indianapolis-based Simon Property Group announced that Sawgrass Mills, the largest outlet, value retail and entertainment destination in the United States with more than 350 stores, will soon break ground on its newest phase of development to increase the footprint of The Colonnade Outlets at Sawgrass Mills. 

    This milestone also represents the soon-to-be-completed 140,000-sq.-ft. retail expansion of the south side of the property.

  • Glendale Galleria names architects for center renovation

    Glendale, Calif. -- Glendale Galleria, a 1.5-million-sq.-ft. super-regional shopping center announced the architects who will work on the center's grand renovation project. Glendale Galleria is owned and operated by Chicago-based General Growth Properties.

  • J.C. Penney adds another Apple exec to its team

    Plano, Texas -- On Thursday, J.C. Penney and CEO Ron Johnson announced a new lineup of executive players to join the department store retailer’s team, one of them from the ranks of Apple.

    Benjamin Fay, senior director of retail real estate, design and development for Apple, has been named executive VP real estate, store design and development for J.C. Penney.

    The Minnesota Vikings are in need of a new football stadium and Target’s EVP property development John Griffith sees a proposed downtown Minneapolis location as one element of a larger development and revitalization plan.   • Best Bye?

    Fresh off the resignation of CEO Brian Dunn and the revelation that the company lost a not-so- insignificant sum of $1.7 billion last quarter, Best Buy’s recent announcement to close 50 stores by the end of 2012 probably didn’t come as a surprise to anyone in our industry. What may have been surprising to some — myself included — is their plan to roll out 100 Best Buy Mobile stores.

  • Gymboree Corp. narrows loss in Q4; plans 105 stores in 2012

    San Francisco -- The Gymboree Corp. reported Wednesday that it narrowed its loss in the quarter ended Jan. 28 to $24.9 million, compared with a loss of $47.3 million a year earlier.

    Sales for the quarter increased 11.9% to $355.8 million, from $318.0 million last year. Same-store sales rose 6%.

    The company announced that it plans to open 105 new stores in fiscal 2012, including 80 Crazy 8 stores.
