  • Mall of San Juan opens in Puerto Rico

    The mall is certainly not dead in Puerto Rico, where Taubman Centers Inc. held the grand opening for the Mall of San Juan on Thursday.

    The island's first upscale shopping center features a singular collection of retailers, more than 60% of which are unique-to-market and the Caribbean's only Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Avenue. The 650,000-square-foot shopping center was developed through a partnership between Taubman and New Century Development, Inc.

  • GameStop eyes growth strategy with emerging formats

    GameStop’s strongest growth in 2015 will have little to do with gaming as the company plans to open between 350 to 550 stores in technology brands segment while paring its GameStop store presence.

    The company’s technology brands segment is comprised of 361 ATT&T brand stores, 63 Cricket branded stores that offer wireless products and services and 60 Simply Mac Stores. Meanwhile, the company has indicated it will close 3%, or nearly 200 of its approximately 6,000 traditional video game stores.

  • Five Below opening 70 stores in 2015

    Philadelphia -- Five Below Inc. on Wednesday reported better-than-expected fiscal fourth-quarter net income of $33.3 million. It also confirmed plans to open 70 stores in 2015, up from 62 in 2014.

    Net sales in the quarter, ended Jan. 31, increased by 24.4% to $263.8 million from $212.0 million the year-ago period. Same-store sales increased by 3.2%. The results exceeded Wall Street expectations.

    For the year, the company reported profit of $48 million. Revenue was reported as $680.2 million.

  • Kleinfeld Hudson’s Bay named Store of the Year by A.R.E.

    Las Vegas -- Kleinfeld Hudson’s Bay, a glamorous bridal shop on the top floor of the Hudson’s Bay’s flagship and headquarters building in Toronto,  took the big prize — Store of the Year — in the Association for Retail Environments 2015 Design Awards. The annual awards recognize the best in retail design, store fixtures and visual presentation.
     

  • Project Profile: Staten Island Mall, New York

    Staten Island Mall announced that the 1.2-million-sq.-ft. property will undergo a much anticipated multi-million dollar redevelopment that will add interior and exterior upgrades, new fashion retailers, restaurants, a Fairway Market and public piazza for guests to gather and enjoy events year-round, including a farmers market, holiday festivities, fashion shows and community fundraisers.

    Enhancements also include the ability for Macy’s to expand.

  • Thor Equities acquires property on Avenue Des Champs-Elysees

    New York -- Thor Equities has signed a contract to acquire a prime retail and office property at 102 Avenue des Champs-Elysees in Paris. “102 Avenue des Champs-Elysees is at the center of one of the most desirable locations in the world, just blocks from the Arc de Triomphe and Place Charles de Gaulle,” said Joseph Sitt, CEO of Thor Equities.  “We continue to believe strongly in the Paris retail market, in particular prime shopping and tourist destinations such as the Champs-Elysees and Boulevard Haussmann.”

Today’s shopping center acquirers are looking for “necessity centers” with a stable rent roll. These centers consist of restaurants, nail salons and other destination retail that is not competing with e-commerce.

  • Ikea to open its largest U.S. store, in Burbank, California

    New York  -- Ikea will open its largest U.S. store on a 22-acre site in Burbank, California. As the first step in the construction process, the retailer must demolish 19 existing structures on the site. The new 456,000-sq.-ft. store is slated to open in spring 2017.

    Reflecting the company’s commitment to sustainability, Ikea plans to recycle, repurpose or salvage as much of the existing buildings’ equipment, materials, and parts as possible.
