Meijer plans to open its smallest urban store yet — but with a twist.   The Grand Rapids, Michigan-based grocer’s newest store will be nearly 30,000 sq. ft., but it won’t feature the Meijer moniker. Instead, the store will go by the name, Bridge Street Market. Construction begins in July, and is expected to be open for business in the early fall of 2018.  

Ikea’s next solar-powered store is in the works.   The home furnishings giant’s future Jacksonville, Florida store, slated to open in the fall, will be the newest location to feature a solar power system. Panel installation will begin this summer, and is expected to be complete by early fall. This will be Ikea’s fifth solar array in the state of Florida, according to the retailer.  

GBT Realty purchased 11.7 acres of land in Kemah, Texas, with plans to build a 79,000-sq.-ft. shopping center, reported mySA, a San Antonio news site. Purchase price was $2.1 million.   According to GBT, the center is 92% leased. Committed tenants include Petco, Marshalls, Ross Dress for Less, and Ulta.    Located south of Houston on Trinity Bay, Kemah has just 2,000 residents, but draws tourists with a boardwalk and entertainment district containing carnival rides, restaurants, and shops.

Coinciding with its recently announced growth plan, Dollar General opened a new distribution center.    The new $100 million facility resides in Janesville, Wisconsin. It is the company’s 14th warehouse. The approximately 1 million-sq.-ft. depot, which began shipping merchandise in January, serves approximately 800 stores in nine states in the upper Midwest, and employs more than 500 employees. Along with more than 130 store locations in the state, Dollar General now has more than 1,300 employees in the state of Wisconsin.

A 50,000-sq.-ft. former Rite Aid store in what was not long ago a rough-and-tumble area of the South Bronx has sold for $17.5 million.   The buyer, an affiliate of ABCAPSTONE plans to redevelop the building — now occupied by a Salvation Army Family Store — into as much as 100,000 sq. ft. of retail space.  

“Retail that can be replaced by the Internet is suffering. We’re trying to give an experience with great architecture, places to hang out and good people,” Regency Centers’ John Mehigan told the Orange County Register last week. That means food and beverage concepts, and lots of them.  

Amazon is bolstering fulfillment efforts in the Golden State.   The online giant will open an 855,000-sq.-ft. fulfillment center in Fresno, California. The new facility will specialize in handling smaller-sized items such as books, electronic devices and children’s toys.   The Fresno facility will be the fifth warehouse in the state’s Central Valley. Amazon currently operates three fulfillment centers in Tracy and Patterson, and a fourth facility under construction in Sacramento.

High-end kitchenware retailer Sur La Table is on a mission to optimize its individual market and expansion strategies.   “Now, more than ever, being able to localize is the key to success,” said Ben Rosenfeld, senior VP of stores at Sur La Table.  

An online clothing brand best known for its signature shirts that are designed to be worn untucked is going to open at Mall of America, in Bloomington, Minnesota.    Untuckit will open a 1,300-sq.-ft. outpost  at the giant mall this fall. It will be the company's first store in Minnesota, and carry shirts for both men and women.      

Hudson’s Bay Co.’s is taking advantage of the views and design of its iconic Calgary building in a new way.   Through a partnership with restaurant group Oliver & Bonacini, the retailer is transforming the entire sixth floor of its 104-year-old building into an event venue. The 18,000-sq.-ft. space, called The Hudson, features meeting rooms on either side of a large common area, and two large event spaces that can accommodate up to 700 people, according to The Calgary Herald.
