  • Bloomberg: Retail sales edge up 0.4% in May

    New York – Initial Bloomberg estimates indicate US retail sales edged up 0.4% last month, with growth in the job market spurring increased consumer willingness to spend money. The projected increase is the largest in three months and follows smaller increases of 0.1% in April.

  • Rite Aid forecasts Q1 profit; in debt refinancing move

    Camp Hill, Pa. -- Rite Aid projected that it would turn a profit in the first quarter of fiscal year 2014, results of which it will announce next week. The company has also moved to refinance its debt, announcing that it would buy half a billion dollars in notes using proceeds from a new loan, while also

    The retail pharmacy chain said it would buy $500 million worth of 7.5% Senior Secured Notes, due 2017, using the proceeds from a $500 million second lien term loan.

    The offer will expire on July 5 unless it's extended, the company said.

  • OfficeMax shareholders to vote on proposed merger July 10

    Naperville, Ill. – OfficeMax shareholders will vote on a proposed merger with Office Depot on July 10, in a special meeting to be in Naperville, Ill. Shareholders of record as of May 28, 2013 are eligible to participate.

    Shareholders will vote on a merger initially announced by OfficeMax and Office Depot on February 20, 2013. The merger process is ongoing and the transaction is expected to be completed by the end of this year subject to shareholder and regulatory approval.

  • Family Dollar Stores names senior VP real estate

    Matthews, N.C. -- Family Dollar Stores names Brad Rogers as senior VP real estate. He replaces Keith Gehl, who retires from the company at the end of June.
       
    Rogers joined Family Dollar in 1998 as a real estate manager with responsibility for new store development in North and South Carolina. Between 2006 and 2011, Rogers assumed greater roles with increased responsibilities, and in 2011, he was named VP real estate.

     

  • Dollar Tree names Philbin president

    Chesapeake, Va. – Dollar Tree has promoted former COO Gary Philbin to the new position of president and COO. Philbin, who has served as COO of Dollar Tree since 2007, spent 30 years in various merchandising and operations executive positions in the grocery vertical before joining Dollar Tree as SVP of Stores in 2001.

  • Overstock.com promotes Polpeka to senior VP

    Salt Lake City – Overstock.com has promoted Brian Popelka to the position of senior VP, customer and partner care. Popelka, who previously served as VP of customer care, will take on management of Overtock’s drop ship fulfillment partnerships along with his existing responsibilities for strategic direction and operational effectiveness of customer care.

  • Tom Cruise makes surprise appearance at Wal-Mart annual meeting

    Bentonville, Ark. -- Wal-Mart Stores  held its annual shareholders meeting on Friday morning and the most noteworthy development at the event — aside from a $15 billion share repurchase authorization — was a surprise appearance and glowing comments by Hollywood heavyweight Tom Cruise.

    CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Dollar Tree has promoted Gary Philbin to president and COO. He has served as COO since 2007. Bob Sasser continues to lead the company as its CEO.

  • Former Dow Chemical VP named to doll company board

    HOUSTON — One World Holdings has appointed Wilma Delaney, former VP of federal, state and provincial governmental and regulatory affairs for Dow Chemical, to its board of directors.

  • New director nominee for Smucker board

    ORRVILLE, Ohio — The J. M. Smucker Company's board has announced that a new director nominee will be included in the company's proxy statement for election at the next annual shareholders meeting to be held Wednesday, Aug. 14.

    The nominee is Robert B. Heisler Jr., the now-retired dean of the college of business administration and graduate school of management at Kent State University, former CEO of McDonald Financial Group and retired chairman and CEO of KeyBank, N.A.
