  • Berkadia arranges financing for Santa Monica center

    New York — The New York office of Berkadia Commercial Mortgage recently arranged $17.5 million in financing for 631 Wilshire Boulevard, a mixed-use property in Santa Monica, California. The borrowers are Pacshore Partners and GreenOak Real Estate.

    The two-year loan came through Berkadia’s proprietary bridge lending program. It features two extension options for one year, a 65% loan-to-value ratio and a 75% loan-to-cost ratio.

  • RKF expands headquarters office

    New York — RKF has announced that it will lease the entire seventh floor of 521 Fifth Avenue in midtown Manhattan.

    With the expansion RKF will occupy 20,987 sq. ft., roughly 30% more space than the current lease. The expansion will enable the firm to increase its ranks by 25%.

     

  • Carrabba’s inks deal for Venice, Florida, restaurant

    Venice, Fla. — Carrabba’s Italian Grill has signed a long-term ground lease for a 1.31-acre outparcel in the parking lot of the Lowe’s Home Improvement store in Venice, Florida. Carrabba’s plans to begin the construction of a new restaurant immediately, with the grand opening slated for late this year.

  • Hhgregg embarks on brand transformation

    Indianapolis -- Appliance, electronics and furniture retailer Hhgregg has embarked on a brand transformation across all customer touch-points, including its 228 store locations and online presence, in an effort to boost its shopping and purchasing experience.

  • A&P taps Agilence to drive lower shrink across stores

    Mount Laurel, N.J. -- Agilence, a provider of cloud-based exception reporting solutions, announced that the Great Atlantic & Pacific Company has selected Agilence’s Retail 20/20 to enhance its chain-wide effort to reduce shrink and fraud.

  • Leslie’s Poolmart opening three stores on May 9; will open 45 in total in 2014

    Phoenix -- Leslie’s Poolmart announced plans to grand open three retail locations on May 9. The stores are located in: Los Banos, California; Utica, Michigan; and Jackson, Tennessee.

    In total, Leslie's plans to open 45 new stores this year, between April and May. With these new stores, Leslie’s will bring its total store count to more than 850 stores nationwide.  

  • Destination Maternity opens 46 in-store shops in Mexico

    Philadelphia -- Destination Maternity Corp. announced the start of its planned expansion into Mexico with the opening of 46 Destination Maternity  branded shop-in-shops through a previously announced international franchise agreement with El Puerto de Liverpool, S.A.B. de C.V., the largest department store operator in Mexico.

  • IBM launches security software/services to protect critical data and disrupt cyber attacks

    Armonk, N.Y. -- IBM has introduced comprehensive new security software and services to help organizations protect their critical data in an environment where advanced persistent threats, zero day attacks, breaches, and the financial impact on an organization continue to rise.

    According to two IBM-commission studies, the average cost of a data breach increased by 15%, reaching an average of $3.5 million. The majority of companies surveyed say targeted attacks are the greatest threat, costing them on average $9.4 million in brand equity alone.

  • Office Depot to close 400 stores by 2016

    Boca Raton, Fla. -- Office Depot will close at least 400 U.S. stores during the next two years as part of its plan to consolidate operations after its acquisition of OfficeMax last November. The closings were not unexpected since there are many locations where the two brands have stores in close proximity to one another. The retailer also raised its full-year adjusted operating income forecast after reporting better-than-expected first quarter results amid cost cutting efforts.

  • The Hispanic Market Comes of Age

    One topic that’s been on my mind lately is the growing Hispanic market in the U.S., and what its clout and purchasing power will mean for retailers — and, subsequently, for retail real estate — in the years ahead. “Emerging” is probably too mild of a word to describe the Hispanic market — exploding might be more accurate.
