  • Canadian health and beauty retailer to open stores in U.S.

    A retailer that specializes in natural, plant-based wellness and beauty products is hoping to make a big splash in the United States.    Saje Natural Wellness will open its first U.S. store at the end of November, in Malibu, California, with plans to open 25 additional locations in 2017. The company’s stores are designed to offer a sensorial and educational experience, allowing engagment with the products on display.   
  • Cabela’s earnings slip in Q3

    Despite sales gains, Cabela’s experienced profit losses for the third quarter.   For the quarter ended Oct. 1, 2016, the outdoor retailer’s total revenue increased 7.6% to $996.5 million; revenue from retail store sales increased 8.1% to $688.6 million; Internet and catalog sales increased 3.6% to $167.4 million; and financial services revenue increased 8.8% to $134.5 million.   
  • Sears sweetens reward for MasterCard 'Shop Your Way' shoppers

    Starting Nov. 1, more than 5 million Sears MasterCard holders whose cards are linked to the Shop Your Way program will earn more Shop Your Way points at Kmart and many of their favorite retailers.   These Sears MasterCard holders will automatically earn more Shop Your Way points on a complimentary basis through December 31, 2017, including:
    • 5% back in points on eligible purchases made at gas stations;
    • 3% back in points on eligible purchases at grocery stores and restaurants
  • Samsung Pay adds three new countries, online payments to portfolio

    One year after launching, Samsung Pay is expanding the program’s reach and functionality.   Samsung Pay is now available in three new countries, including Malaysia, Russia and Thailand, which will make the mobile wallet accessible to consumers across 10 countries by the end of 2016.   
  • Ascena Group’s non-executive chair to retire

    Elliot S. Jaffe, ascena retail group’s co-founder and non-executive chairman of the board of directors, announced his plan to retire.   Jaffe co-founded dressbarn in 1962 and served as CEO until 2002. He was ascena’s chairman of the board until January 2011, and then transitioned to non-executive chairman.  
  • Austin named top town for real estate development

    Texas is the go-to state for real estate developers in the U.S. and Canada, according to PwC and the Urban Land Institute.   In the 38th annual edition of the joint study, “Emerging Trends in Real Estate,” investment companies surveyed named Austin and Dallas/Fort Worth as the top two cities for development. The Northwest put in the second-best showing, with Portland and Seattle coming in at numbers three and four.  
  • Moody’s: Slow supply chains are department stores' Achilles heel

    Relatively slow supply chains are hindering department stores’ ability to compete effectively in today’s retail market.     
  • New J.C. Penney location emerges in San Bernardino

    In an age when mall owners’ overriding challenge is what to do with the space left by departed department stores, one 50-year-old center in California landed a new one.   Penney last week opened a 119,000-sq.-ft. location at Inland Center in San Bernardino, joining co-anchors Macy’s, Sears, and Forever 21. The fully renovated space it occupies was last home to Gottshalks.
