  • NRF calls NLRB ruling a ‘roadblock’ to job creation

    Washington — The National Retail Federation wasted no time responding to a ruling by the National Labor Relations board concerning the redefinition of the concept of joint employees.

    NRF and other business groups are concerned that the redefinition  could be used to make large businesses and franchisors responsible for the actions of subcontractors or local franchisees even when they do not exercise direct control over those companies’ employees.

  • Chain looks to tap into pet supplies, services, market

    Livonia, Mich. -- Pet Supplies Plus is looking to capitalize on the $58 billion pet industry.

    The company, the nation’s largest pet retail franchise, announced that, so far this year, it has 19 new locations in the pipeline. Newly signed agreements will bring the neighborhood pet stores to new and underserved markets including Nashville, Atlanta, Houston, Jacksonville and Denver.
     

  • C-store retailer to offer its first private label credit card

    Altoona, Pa. -- Family-owned convenience store chain Sheetz is partnering with First Bankcard to offer its first private label credit card, the Sheetz Personal Credit Card.

    First Bankcard is a division of First National Bank of Omaha and a leading issuer of credit cards.

    The card is designed to be used exclusively at Sheetz stores and offers customers’ automatic savings at the chain’s fuel pumps, as well the ability to earn points on every qualifying purchase in its stores.

    Aliso Viejo, Calif. – Johnny Rockets is now focusing its global expansion efforts on developments in Southeast Asia. The casual dining chain is seeking area developers for expansion into Thailand and Vietnam.

    Johnny Rockets currently operates Southeast Asian franchise stores in Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia through its 14 open restaurants and eight others in development.

    Ascena Retail Group Inc. has completed its acquisition of Ann Inc., formerly called Ann Taylor. Shares of Ann Inc. will be delisted from the NYSE and trading  ceased at the close of business on Friday, August 21st.
