  • Finish strong: heat and holiday timing to aid July sales

    After a weaker-than-expected showing in June, Target needs a solid performance in July to deliver on its second quarter sales and profit expectations.

    June same-store sales increased a modest 2.1%, well below a 4.4% increase in May, but the deceleration didn’t cause the company to adjust its second quarter guidance. The company expects second quarter earnings adjusted to exclude expenses related to its entry in Canada to range from $1.04 to $1.14 and earnings that include the Canadian costs to range from 94 centers to $1.04.

  • Crazy 8 to open at Discover Mills this fall

    Lawrenceville, Ga. – Indianapolis-based Simon Property Group said that Crazy 8 will open a store at its Discover Mills property, Atlanta’s largest outlet, value retail and entertainment destination.

    Gymboree Corp.’s Crazy 8, slated to open this fall, will join newly announced tenant Old Navy Outlet at the center.

    Discover Mills features more than 180 retailers, as well as four full-service restaurants and entertainment venues.
     

  • Walgreens teams with app developers on photo printing

    Deerfield, Ill. — Walgreens on Tuesday extended its innovation in mobile technology with the introduction of a developer portal that allows third-party software developers to integrate the Walgreens QuickPrints software development kit, enabling photo printing directly from iPhone and Android mobile devices.

  • Report: Abercrombie planning big share buyback; cutting back on expansion in Europe

    New York -- Abercrombie & Fitch plans a big share buyback to appease investors, the New York Post reported, and is also likely to cut back on its aggressive expansion plans in Europe.

    The report, which quoted unnamed “insiders,” said the chain is likely to announce its plans on or before its next quarterly earnings report in mid-August.

  • RILA warns of potentially devastating disruption

    New York -- The Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) urged the International Longshoremen’s Association and the United States Maritime Alliance to reach a contract agreement well in advance of the Sept. 30 deadline in order to prevent a disruption to the flow of goods.

    The ongoing labor negotiations affect 14 East and Gulf Coast ports, which together account for 95% of all containerized shipments to the Eastern seaboard.

  • In case you missed it, Target shows its baby bump

    A partnership between New York designer Liz Lange and Target has contributed to a transformation of the maternity wear market over the past decade, according to Target’s hometown newspaper the Star Tribune.

    A recent article on the partnership and its success quoted Lange and even got SVP Trish Adams to hold still for a photo shoot at a downtown Minneapolis store.

  • Coupon search engine names marketing VP

    DENVER — ShopAtHome.com, a coupon search engine, announced that Tim Mayer has joined the company as VP marketing.
     
    In his new role, Mayer will be responsible for spearheading this objective, overseeing user experience and member engagement.

  • Best Buyout?

    With recent reports indicating Best Buy Founder and former Chairman Richard Schulze is not expected to present a buyout option to the board in the immediate future, some of the buzz about the iconic electronics retailer has died down. But the handwringing and public speculation about Best Buy’s future has me thinking about what will—or perhaps, should—come next for the brand.
