  • Online shopping platform names COO

    LOS GATOS, Ca. — Wanderful Media, a new Silicon Valley company that helps retailers bring consumers into local stores and facilitates ways for consumers to discover local merchandise, has appointed Doug Kilponen as its new COO. In his new role, he will oversee all business units and collaborate with CEO Ben T. Smith IV on strategic goals.

    Founded in November 2011, Wanderful Media is creating an online platform for shoppers to explore products and sales with the mission of connecting shoppers with local brick-and-mortar retailers.

  • Starbucks to open 1,500 new stores in U.S. by 2017

    New York -- Starbucks Coffee Co. is moving ahead full-steam. The company on Wednesday announced accelerated global growth plans that include opening at least 1,500 stores in the United States during the next five years. Including Canada and South America in the mix, Starbucks expects to add a total of 3,000 new locations in its Americas region — and renovate thousands more — by 2017.

  • Online retailer Gilt names new CEO

    Discount luxury goods retailer Gilt appointed board member Michelle Peluso CEO effective at the end of February 2013 to replace company founder Kevin Ryan.

    Peluso is currently the global consumer chief marketing and Internet officer at Citigroup and has served on the Gilt board since 2009. She fills the position held by Kevin Ryan who founded the innovative company in 2007 and will remain as chairman. Current chairman Susan Lyne will become vice chairman.

  • Ethan Allen will use Demandware’s global commerce capabilities to grow online presence

    Burlington, Mass. -- Demandware announced Ethan Allen Interiors will leverage the Demandware Commerce platform as the digital foundation of its global expansion strategy.

    Ethan Allen recently launched its first site on the Demandware platform in Canada to coincide with the grand opening of its first Design Center in Montreal. Ethan Allen plans to re-launch its U.S. e-commerce site with Demandware in 2013 in addition to site launches in other countries, including Europe, to support its new design center in Brussels.

  • Target exec joins Verizon board

    NEW YORK — Verizon Communications has elected Kathryn A. Tesija, EVP of merchandising and supply chain at Target to the Verizon board of directors, effective immediately.

    "Kathee Tesija brings to Verizon her valuable consumer insight as well as significant experience in managing the complex, large-scale, global retail functions of merchandising and supply chain," said Lowell C. McAdam, Verizon chairman and CEO.

    The addition of Tesija brings Verizon's total board membership to 12.

  • Simon acquires 100% ownership of two upscale outlet centers

    Indianapolis -- Simon Property Group said Wednesday it has acquired Paragon Outlets Grand Prairie in Grand Prairie, Texas, and Paragon Outlets Livermore Valley in Livermore, Calif.

    Simon now owns 100% of each asset.

    The 417,000-sq.-ft. Grand Prairie center is tenanted by Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5th, Bloomingdale's The Outlet Store, Coach, Cole Haan, DKNY, Hugo Boss, Kate Spade New York, J.Crew, Michael Kors, Nike and Tommy Hilfiger. The center opened in August 2012 and is 100% leased.

  • Topshop’s Philip Green in talks to sell 25% stake

    Los Angeles -- Multiple reports on Tuesday said that British billionaire and Topshop owner Sir Philip Green is negotiating with Leonard Green & Partners to sell a 25% stake in the TopShop and Topman chains.

    The two brands, which would be broken off from Philip Green’s other Arcadia Group retail holdings, are valued at $1.61 billion. An announcement is expected as early as Thursday.

    Neither Philip Green nor Leonard Green has commented directly on the impending transaction.

  • Mason out as Tesco aborts Fresh & Easy

    Tesco arrived in the U.S. in 2007 amid great fanfare with its first Fresh & Easy stores. Now, just five years later, the 30 year Tesco veteran in charge of the 200 unit operation is gone and the company is looking to unload the stores.
