  • Harris-Teeter helps Kroger beat Street in Q4 as company racks up another impressive year

    Cincinnati – Benefits from its acquisition of the Harris-Teeter grocery chain, which The Kroger Co. acquired in January 2014, helped boost results at Kroger during fourth quarter 2014. It was the supermarket giant’s 45th consecutive quarter of same-store sales growth.

    Kroger’s net income rose 23% to $518 million, beating Wall Street expectations with a 22% increase from $422 million last year.

  • Online crafts marketplace Etsy looks to go public with $100 million IPO

    Brooklyn, N.Y. - Etsy Inc., the popular online bazaar where people sell artsy goods and handmade crafts and clothing, has filed a registration statement with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for a proposed initial public offering (IPO) in which it hopes to raise at least $100 million.

  • Petland hires ex-Walmart exec as it aims to expand

    Petland has hired a former Walmart executive as vice president of corporate stores as the pet supply retailer looks to expand its national footprint. 

    Although Tony Samples last worked at Walmart in 2006, Petland touted his Walmart experience in a news release. "Tony brings extensive retail experience to Petland at a time when Petland is expanding its retail footprint," said Petland President and CEO Joe Watson. Samples will lead Petland's retail store division and oversee the company's merchandising and marketing efforts.

  • Report: Bain, Golden Gate both want Ann Inc.

    New York – At least two major suitors are vying for the hand of Ann Taylor parent company Ann Inc. According to Reuters, private equity firms Bain Capital and Golden Gate are both negotiating to purchase Ann Inc.

    Ann Inc. has a $1.6 billion market capitalization. There is no guarantee either company will receive the financing they would need to make a purchase, and other potential buyers may emerge this week.
     

  • Cabela’s to open new store in Ohio, in spring 2016

    Sidney, Neb. -- Cabela’s Incorporated  announced plans to open a store in Centerville, Ohio, in the greater Dayton area.

    Construction on the 70,000-sq.-ft. store is scheduled to begin in 2015, with a spring 2016 opening. It will be located in the Cornerstone at Centerville development. Oberer Development Company is the developer.

  • Los Angeles-area Kohl’s sells for $22 million

    Irvine, Calif. -- Hanley Investment Group announced that Ed Hanley, Kevin Fryman and Eric Wohl negotiated the sale of an 88,000-sq.-ft. Kohl's Department Store, located in the Los Angeles area. The single-tenant triple-net leased property sold for $21,950,000, representing a historic national record-breaking low cap rate of 4.80%. 



  • Abercrombie & Fitch fails with teens in Q4

    Troubled retailer Abercrombie & Fitch continued to be out of favor with its teen target market in the fourth quarter, with declines in both income and sales. 

    Looking ahead, the company said its priorities include increasing comparable sales trends in both its U.S. and international stores, making strategic investments in its omnichannel business, ongoing expense reductions, and selective expansion in high-growth international markets.
