  • Aldi to open first New Hampshire location

    Boston -- WS Development announced that Aldi will open a new store at Stateline Shopping Center, located in Salem, N.H.

    The new store, the grocer’s first in the state, will join a newly opened Lowe’s anchor, as well as Sovereign Bank and NAMCO at the recently redeveloped 232,000-sq.-ft. shopping center.

  • Tanger Outlet Centers and Simon form JV to open new outlet center

    Houston -- Greensboro, N.C.-based Tanger Factory Outlet Centers and Indianapolis-based Simon Property Group announced Thursday that they have entered into a 50/50 joint venture agreement to develop a Tanger Outlet Center south of Houston, in Texas City.

    Phase I is slated for 350,000 sq. ft. of brand name and designer outlet stores; the 55-acre site is expected to accommodate future expansion of about 120,000 sq. ft.

    Tenant announcements and ground breaking ceremonies are slated for July; the center is scheduled to open in summer 2012.

  • Borders to sell itself to private investment firm for $215 million

    Ann Arbor, Mich. -- Borders Group announced Thursday that it has agreed to sell itself to Najafi Cos. for $215 million. The deal is subject to court approval.

    Najafi Cos. is a Phoenix-based private investment company which owns the Book-of-the-Month Club.

    The "stalking horse" bid will open an auction for the company and its assets, so a higher bid is possible, according to reports.

  • Donahue Schriber announces promotions

    Costa Mesa, Calif. -- Donahue Schriber announced Wednesday the promotion of three executives to senior VP status.

    In their new roles, Henry Avila, senior VP asset management, Heather Beal, senior VP leasing, and Scott Lawrence, senior VP construction, will work closely with Donahue Schriber’s executive committee on future decisions affecting the company.

  • Rue21 opens 700th store, on track to open 110 stores in fiscal 2011

    Warrendale, Pa. -- Rue21 said Thursday it has opened its 700th store, located in New Braunfels, Texas.

    The store is Rue21's 80th in the state. Year-to-date, the retailer has opened 63 stores and said it is on target to open 110 new stores and convert 35 existing stores to its larger etc! format in fiscal 2011.

    Long-term growth strategy includes opening in strip centers, regional malls and outlet centers, and the New Braunfels location is Rue21's 360th strip center location.

  • Study: Retailers Eye Consumer Behavior as Economy Evolves

    With sales experiencing the peaks and valleys of a slowly recovering economy, retailers are watching their customers even closer than ever.

    According to a study by accounting and consulting firm BDO USO, LLP, New York City, retailers have been less concerned in 2011 about consumer confidence and spending and, instead, are more watchful of consumer demand and interest.

  • Ahold appoints chief commercial development officer

    AMSTERDAM — Ahold has tapped retail veteran James McCann to serve in the newly created role of chief commercial development officer.

  • Gap to make Africa debut

    San Francisco -- Gap announced Wednesday that it will open its first Gap store in Egypt this July, and its first Gap and Banana Republic stores in Morocco in October.

    The move is part of the retailer’s global expansion strategy that calls for doubling its franchise stores to 400 by fiscal year 2014.

    Gap started shipping to Egypt, Morocco and South Africa in 2010, but these stores are the first on the continent.
