  • Chico's Q2 profit soars 42%, announces purchase of Boston Proper

    Fort Myers, Fla. -- Chico’s FAS reported Wednesday that its profit for the second quarter surged 42% to $43.4 million, up from $30.5 million a year earlier. Revenue rose 18% to $551.4 million, topping Wall Street’s expected $536.3 million, and same-store sales increased 12.8%. By brand, same-store sales were up 11.9% at Chico and Sonoma Intimates, and comps were up 14.9% at White House | Black Market.

  • CBRE announces promotions

    Los Angeles -- CB Richard Ellis Group announced the promotion of two executives for its Global Corporate Services business.

    Jim Wilson is being promoted to COO and Ken Loeber is being promoted to global chief sales officer for GCS.

    In his new role, Wilson, a 23-year industry veteran, will be responsible for GCS’s major global service lines (Facilities Management, Project Management and Transaction Management) as well as continuing to have operational responsibility for more than 150 corporate clients across all global regions.

  • eBay completes buyout of open source e-commerce platform

    SAN JOSE, Calif. — eBay announced that it has completed its previously announced acquisition of Magento Inc., the creators of Magento, a leading open source e-commerce platform. The deal follows eBay’s acquisition of a minority stake in the company in 2010. eBay now owns 100% of the outstanding shares of Magento. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

  • Sears Holdings names CFO

    Hoffman Estates, Ill. -- Sears Holdings Corp. said Tuesday it has named Robert A. Schriesheim as executive VP and CFO.

    Schriesheim’s position as executive VP is effective immediately, and he will begin his CFO duties on Aug. 22.

    Schriesheim most recently was CFO for Hewitt Associates, leading the company's global financial and administrative roles until its merger with Aon Corp. He replaces acting CFO Bill Phelan.

  • Sears Holdings names finance chief

    HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. — Sears Holdings announced Tuesday that Robert Schriesheim will join the company as EVP and CFO.  Schriesheim, who starts with the company immediately as EVP, will assume his responsibilities as CFO effective Aug. 22.

    Schriesheim, 51, most recently was CFO for Hewitt Associates, leading the company's global financial and administrative roles until its merger with Aon Corp.

  • Wal-Mart profits rise in Q2, U.S. same-store sales flat

    Bentonville, Ark. -- Wal-Mart Stores reported Tuesday that profit for the quarter ended July 31 rose to $3.8 billion, up from $3.6 billion in the year-ago period. Overall revenue, up 5.4% to $109.37 billion, topped Wall Street’s expectations.

    Yet, the world’s largest retailer is feeling the pinch from a tight economy that is slow to loosen. Wal-Mart U.S., the company's biggest unit, posted a 0.9% drop in same-store sales, the ninth consecutive quarterly drop and beneath analysts' estimates for a 0.6% fall.

  • Michaels inks five-year deal with LogiSource

    IRVING, Texas  — Michaels Stores and procurement management firm announced on Friday a five-year agreement under which LogicSource will provide print procurement and related services to Michaels.

    More than $250 million of print and promotional spend will be covered over the life of the contract.

    Prior to beginning the relationship, LogicSource conducted a strategic analysis of Michaels’s print production ecosystem, from creative through to distribution, and developed a program designed for cost savings and operational enhancements.

  • Sur La Table to open NYC flagship in Hearst Tower

    Seattle -- Cooking retailer Sur La Table said Monday it will open a flagship store in Hearst Tower, New York City, in late 2011.

    The chain’s first NYC space opened in SoHo in 2005 and a second store in the Upper East Side opened in 2010.

    The new store will include Sur La Table’s largest kitchen and cooking class program. Customers will be able to take cooking classes, as well as attend events with media partners and renowned chefs from around the world. Cooking classes are currently slated to start in early December.
