  • Art Van Furniture Debuts in Chicagoland

    Warren, Mich. — Michigan-based Art Van Furniture opened its first out-of-state retail store in Orland Park, Ill., last week with a Motown-themed grand opening celebration.

    The new 47,000-sq.-ft. location heralds the opening of five more Art Van stores in the Chicago region in coming months. Locations include Ford City-Chicago, Batavia, Elston Avenue-Chicago and Merrillville-Hobart, Indiana. The new stores will add 600 new jobs to the region.

  • Skullcandy pumps up its executive sales team

    PARK CITY, Utah — Audio brand Skullcandy has promoted Denny Bruce to head of domestic sales, reporting to the company's CEO, Hoby Darling. 

    In this role, Bruce will be responsible for overseeing all Skullcandy brand distribution in the U.S. as well as building out a domestic brand and sales strategy for the company's 2XL and Gaming products.

  • GNC opens first standalone China store

    Pittsburgh -- GNC Holdings Inc. on Monday opens its first freestanding store in China. The store, located in the Raffles City complex in Shanghai, is the first of about 25 standalone stores GNC plans to open in China during the next 12 months.

  • Office Depot offers online back-to-college help

    Boca Raton, Fla. – Office Depot is offering college students a variety of online back-to-school shopping services through a dedicated page on its e-commerce site. Features include an online catalog geared toward college students and an online college checklist, as well as a partnership with connected learning platform Chegg.

    Through the Chegg partnership, Office Depot will run a contest called the “Countdown to College Giveaway” with prizes including technology devices and school supplies, and co-authored online tips and articles.

  • Robert H. Ham changes name to Firefly Store Solutions

    Greensboro, N.C. -- Robert H. Ham, a provider of store fixtures and display items, announced that the company has changed its name and brand to Firefly Store Solutions.
     
    While Firefly Store Solutions has adopted a new corporate logo, the company’s staff and service remains unchanged.

  • Fewer movies in 2013 contribute to Hasbro Q2 dip

    PAWTUCKET, R.I. — Hasbro reported net revenues of $766.3 million for the second quarter ended June 30, a 6% decline compared to $811.5 million in 2012. Despite seeing growth across its girls, games and preschool categories, it was not enough to offset a decline in the company’s boys category. 

  • Former Mattel exec to elevate Ergobaby marketing

    LOS ANGELES — Ergobaby has named former VP of digital at Mattel and group strategy director at the DuMont Project, Cynthia Neiman, as the company’s CMO.

    Neiman has more than 20 years of experience developing multichannel marketing strategies for both global corporations and internet startups. In addition to developing digital strategies for leading brands and retailers at digital consultancy the DuMont Project, Neiman also boasts deep experience in many consumer products categories including infant, pre-school, digital games and pets. 

  • Report: Starwood Capital joins bidding for Saks

    New York -- Starwood Capital Group LLC, the investment firm headed by real estate developer Barry Sternlicht, has joined the bidding for Saks Inc., according to a report by the New York Post. Starwood Capital invests in retail, office and residential real estate.

    The bid by Starwood is worth about $2.5 billion, or $17-$18 per share, according to the report. The amount is roughly equal to a previously existing bid from Canadian retail conglomerate Hudson’s Bay, which also owns the Lord & Taylor department store chain.
