  • Washington Spotlight: May Day Becomes International Day of Anger

    Monday's May Day demonstrations across the country and world are yet another reminder that we are in a politically precarious position in this country. The intensity of anger within our populace far outweighs the ability of our government mechanisms to address it.  
  • Staples continues to explore sale

    Two private equity firms are “actively” exploring a buyout of Staples, according to a report by CNBC.   Cerberus Capital Management and Sycamore Partners have emerged as the leading frontrunners pursuing a deal, the report said. While other private equity firms, including Clayton Dubilier & Rice LLC, Advent International Corp and Bain Capital LLC, held discussions with the retailer include, they appear to be walked back and are less interested in the deal.  
  • Sheetz on hiring spree

    A fast-growing convenience store operator has announced a major hiring initiative.   Sheetz said it is looking to hire more than 3,400 employees companywide. The hiring initiative aims to increase Sheetz's total employee count and number of full-time positions by creating and filling jobs at stores throughout Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Ohio and North Carolina.   
  • Inland’s Goodwin gets lifetime service award

    Daniel Goodwin, chairman and CEO of Inland Real Estate Group, was presented with the first Lifetime Achievement Award ever bestowed by Illinois Realtors, a century-old trade association with 44,000 members.   “Dan Goodwin is an example of that rare person who excels not only as a businessman, but also as a compassionate leader who is interested in helping others realize the dream of property ownership,” said Doug Carpenter, president of Illinois Realtors.  
  • UPS reportedly asks retailers to share delivery fees

    Who is responsible for fees related to unexpected, yet low shipping volume? According to UPS, it should be its retailer partners.   The delivery service is putting retailers on the hook to share costs related to labor and surplus space on trucks if the merchant fails to ship its forecasted packages during peak periods, according to MarketWatch. Fees could also apply if there is a discrepancy among the sizes of boxes expected to ship,   
  • Bankrupt Gander Mountain acquired

    The largest U.S. chain dedicated to recreational vehicles and a group of liquidations have come together to thrown a lifeline of sorts to outdoor retailer Gander Mountain.

That makes one ponder how much of President Trump’s strong language is just bluster and how much might be indicative of a true departure from policy orthodoxy.  
  • Report: Boxed to create robotics-run warehouse

    While some industry observers fear that robots will replace retail workers, Boxed is embracing the technology.   The online retailer, which sells consumer packaged goods in bulk, announced on Thursday, April 27, that it will completely automate its fulfillment center in Union, New Jersey, with robotics — a move that will contribute to driving reliable profits, according to Business Insider.
