  • CEO of Claire’s Stores resigns; replaced by industry vet

    Beatrice Lafon, the CEO of teen accessories retailer Claire's Stores, has resigned and been replaced by a current member of the board, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing.

  • California puts crimp in Costco in April

    Slow traffic at its California stores proved a drag for Costco Wholesale Corp. in April.

    The retailer reported flat same-store sales in April, below analysts’ estimates of a 1.2% increase.

    Total sales in April rose 3% to $8.98 billion, helped by strength in Canada.

    Excluding gasoline-price fluctuations and currency exchange rates, U.S. same-store sales rose 2%, below estimates for growth of 3.4%. Same-store sales in Canada increased 2% overall and 7% when excluding gas prices and currency.

  • David’s Bridal enters into its first franchise agreement

    David’s Bridal is expanding south of the border.

    The bridal and special occasion retailer is partnering with Diltex, a leading manufacturer and retailer of intimate apparel in Mexico, to open its first franchise location, in Mexico City.

    The store is expected to open by the end of 2016 with additional franchise locations planned to open over the next five years across the country.

  • New rule will impact retail store signage in Quebec

    Wal-Mart and other retailers who operate stores in Canada’s Quebec province are going to have make some changes to their store signage.

    The Quebec government plans to modify the language laws of the province, where French is the predominant language, to add French to their exterior signage. Companies, however, will not have to change their trademarks.

  • Another retailer to explore strategic alternatives

    Build-A-Bear Workshop on Tuesday said it has hired financial and legal advisers to help it explore strategic alternatives. The news came the day after General Nutrition Corp. (GNC) said it was doing the same.

  • Fast-growing fashion retailer taps Roots Canada exec as president

    Kit and Ace announced that Wendy Bennison has been named president. Interim CEO Paul Wilson will resume his role as CEO of Hold It All Inc.

    “We feel very fortunate to have Wendy on board,” said Wilson. “She is a proven leader with an incredible depth of knowledge in the retail marketplace – both here in Canada and internationally. We’re confident that there is no better person to helm the next phase of our growth.”
