  • GGP, Kimco form JV to redevelop Owings Mills Mall

    Owings Mills, Md. -- Chicago-based General Growth Properties and Hyde Park, N.Y.-based Kimco Realty Corp. said Thursday that the two companies have formed a joint venture partnership to redevelop Owings Mills Mall, Md.

    The new JV gives each company 50% interest in the 25-year-old, 1 million-sq.-ft. mall; GGP previously owned 100%.

    "We're exploring a number of options to revive Owings Mills Mall and provide the shoppers of northwest Baltimore County a more viable center that meets their needs,” said Shobi Khan, COO, GGP.

  • Kohl’s adds $30 million to holiday ad budget; most spent on digital, social media

    Menomonee Falls, Wis. -- A Friday report in Advertising Age said that Kohl’s Corp. has added $30 million to its fourth quarter marketing spend in order to pad its efforts to garner holiday shopping dollars.

    In 2010, the retailer spent $113 million on measured media in the fourth quarter, according to the report, and will spend about $143 million this year. Annually, Kohl’s spends $340 million.

  • Dillard's, Nordstrom's signify strength of luxury

    NEW YORK — Further proof that the sluggish economy is affecting higher-income households much less than lower-income households can be found in the quarterly profits of Dillard's and Nordstrom's, which both reported earnings this week.

    Dillard’s Inc. reported Friday that profit for the quarter ended Oct. 29 soared a record 85% to $26.6 million, compared with $14.4 million in the year-ago period. Strong comps and contained expenses propelled the strong performance.

  • VF Corp. CEO joins Lowe's board

    MOORESVILLE, N.C. — Lowe’s announced that it has named Eric Wiseman, president and CEO of apparel manufacturer VF Corp., to its board of directors. Wiseman will serve on the board’s compensation and governance committees. 

    Wiseman has been CEO of VF Corp., whose brands include The North Face, Timberland, Vans and Wrangler, since January 2008. Before being named CEO, Wiseman served as president and chief operating officer from 2006 to 2007, responsible for VF’s global business and day-to-day operations.

  • Body Central Corp. profit doubles in Q3, on track to open 33 new stores

    Jacksonville, Fla. -- Body Central Corp., which operates under the Body Central and Body Shop banners, reported Friday that net income for the third quarter more than doubled to $2.8 million, from $1.3 million a year earlier.

    Total revenue rose 18% to $67.1 million, compared with $56.9 million a year ago. Results were boosted by a 21.2% increase in store sales. Same-store sales rose 8.2%.

    The company opened five new stores during the third quarter and is on track to open 33 new stores in 2011.
     

  • Dollar Tree opens at Pine Tree Shopping Center

    Portland, Maine -- Brixmor Property Group announced a 11,002-sq.-ft. Dollar Tree recently opened at Pine Tree Shopping Center, in Portland, Maine.

    Brixmor, based in New York City, is the owner of Pine Tree Shopping Center.
     

  • 99 Cents Only profit up 17% in Q2, on track to open 12 stores in second half

    City of Commerce, Calif. -- Discounter 99 Cents Only Stores reported Wednesday that profit for the second quarter rose 17% to $15.1 million, compared with $12.9 million a year earlier.

    Revenue rose 8.8% to $363 million, beating analysts’ expected $357.3 million. Same-store sales increased 6.7%.

  • Report: JCP’s Johnson taps former Apple colleagues for new team

    New York City -- A Thursday report by the Wall Street Journal said that new J.C. Penney CEO Ron Johnson, who recently left Apple to run the department store chain, is recruiting other former Apple players to join the J.C. Penney team.

    According to the report, J.C. Penney is nearing a deal with Michael Kramer, former CFO of Apple Retail from 2000 to 2005 and currently CEO of Kellwood Co., to join J.C. Penney as its COO. WSJ cited people familiar with the matter, and said Kramer will start at Penney effective Dec. 1.
