  • Report: Retail and consumer M&A volume jumped in 2012

    New York -- A report released Thursday by PwC found that U.S. retail and consumer merger & acquisition activity in 2012 drove both deal volume and value up from the prior year as the number of larger deals over $1 billion almost doubled.

    According to PwC’s U.S. retail and consumer M&A insights “2012 Year in Review and 2013 Outlook” report, private equity activity in the retail sector comprised nearly 40% of deal volume and 55% of deal value, and IPO volume increased 38%.

  • Tractor Supply outsources data center hosting to Peak 10

    Charlotte, N.C. -- National IT infrastructure and cloud solutions provider Peak 10 Inc. has been selected to host the data center of Tractor Supply Co., the largest retail farm and ranch store chain in the United States.  

  • Rite Aid comps up on strong flu season

    CAMP HILL, Pa. — Rite Aid reported a slight increase in same-store sales for the month of January, thanks in part to strong sales of flu products.

  • Kroger central division head retires

    CINCINNATI — Robert Moeder, president of Kroger's central division, is retiring from the company after more than 40 years in the retail industry.

  • Tractor Supply Q4 profit up

    Brentwood, Tenn. — Tractor Supply Co. reported that net income for the quarter was $79.5 million, compared with net income of $70.5 million in the fourth quarter of the prior year.

    Net sales for the fourth quarter increased to $1.29 billion, or 3.7% over the prior year's 14-week period.

    Same-store sales increased 4.7%, compared with a strong 7.6% increase in the prior-year period.

    The company opened 25 new stores in fourth quarter 2012, compared with 31 new store openings in the prior year's fourth quarter.

  • Facebook friends retailers with new gift card program

    SAN FRANCISCO — Target has found a new friend in Facebook, as the retailer has become one of the first businesses to participate in the social network's new gift card program.

    According to a Reuters report, consumers can buy cards for their Facebook friends for use at four different businesses including Target, LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vitton SA's Jamba Juice and Darden Restaurants Inc's Olive Garden.

  • The Container Store to open in Tampa, Orlando and Boca Raton, Fla.

    New York -- The Container Store is expanding its presence in Florida with three new locations set to open in 2013.
       
    The company will open a store in Tampa, Fla., on March 16. The retailer said the Tampa location is its  most requested city for a new store according to its Facebook fans. It will be The Container Store’s third store in Florida, soon to be followed by two additional store openings in Orlando and Boca Raton later this year.

     

  • Levin names VP, CFO

    North Plainfield, N.J. -- Levin Management Corp. said that Timothy G. DeCola has been named VP and CFO of the company, replacing the retired Harold Harris.

    DeCola joins Levin from Pettinaro Construction Co., where he served as CFO. He will be responsible for all aspects of corporate finance and risk management at Levin for company-owned and managed properties as well as for real estate tax and financing reviews.
