  • Macy’s fined for worker mistreatment

    New York – Macy’s will pay $175,000 in civil penalties to the U.S. government in an agreement with the Department of Justice (DOJ) settling claims of mistreatment of immigrant workers. In addition to paying the $175,000 fine, Macy’s will also revise its employment eligibility reverification policies and procedures and to provide training to its human resources personnel across the country on the anti-discrimination provision of the Immigration and Naturalization Act (INA).

  • Overall sales growth across ConAgra brands fortify Q4 results

    OMAHA, Neb. — Overall sales growth in ConAgra Foods’ consumer foods segment nourished the company’s results for the fiscal 2013 fourth quarter ended May 26. 

    The company’s consumer foods segment, which includes specialty potato, seasonings, blends, flavors, and milled grain products, posted sales of $2.3 billion for the quarter, an increase of 7% from $2.1 billion for the quarter last year. Its operating profit was $291 million for the quarter, an increase of 8% from $270 million for the quarter last year, while sales increased 7%.

  • Rona closes 11 stores as part of restructuring

    Boucherville, Quebec - Canadian home improvement retailer Rona Inc. is closing 11 non-profitable stores as part of a broader restructuring plan. Rona will also reduce administrative, marketing, merchandising and distribution expenses and eliminate 125 administrative jobs. In February 2013, Rona cut 200 jobs.

    Rona rejected an unsolicited $1.72 billion USD buyout offer from Lowe’s in August 2012.

    SPARKS, Md. — McCormick & Company reported sales and profit results for the second quarter ended May 31, at which time the company completed its acquisition of Wuhan Asia Pacific Condiments, a leading bouillon manufacturer in central China.

  • Shop.org names 6 new board members

    Washington, D.C. – Shop.org, the digital retail division of the National Retail Federation (NRF), named six new members to its board of directors and also reappointed three existing members. All nine members will serve two-year terms.

  • New team captain at Sports Authority

    ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Sports Authority has appointed Michael Foss as the company’s new CEO, following Darrell Webb’s announcement that he is retiring as CEO and chairman of the board. 

  • Zimmer strikes back again

    Fremont, Calif. – George Zimmer, the founder and executive chairman of Men’s Wearhouse who was stripped of his executive chairman title last week and has been engaging in a war of words with the retailer ever since, continued his verbal battle in an open letter released on June 26.

  • Duke: Walmart making renewable energy affordable for everyone

    It seemed like everyone had a take on President Barack Obama’s big climate change speech this week and among them was Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., president and CEO Mike Duke.

    Walmart had a comment from Duke ready to go less than an hour after the President concluded his remarks on Tuesday at Georgetown University. As expected, Duke applauded the president and his administration for their commitment to renewable energy and conservation and then piggybacked on the speech to tout Walmart’s own accomplishments and commitment to the renewable energy and conservation.
