  • Gap to test 'fast fashion' in some stores

    With another difficult fiscal quarter under its belt, the CEO of Gap Inc. says the retailer will begin testing fast fashion merchandise in select stores.

  • Texas has space for fifth Amazon fulfillment center

    Seattle – Texas is known for its wide open spaces, and Amazon.com Inc. is slowly filling them in with distribution centers. Amazon plans to open a fifth Texas fulfillment center in San Marcos.

    Amazon employees at the 855,000 sq.-ft. San Marcos fulfillment center will pick, pack, and ship smaller customer items, such as books, electronics and toys.

  • Charles & Colvard names two new board members

    Morrisville, N.C. — Jewelry retailer Charles & Covard Ltd. has appointed Jaqui Lividini and Suzanne Miglucci to serve on the company’s board of directors. Lividini previously served as senior VP fashion merchandising & communications at Saks Fifth Avenue and has served as CEO and founding partner of brand strategy company Lividini & Co. since 2005.

    Miglucci previously served as senior director of global procurement solution marketing for SAP and has served as chief marketing officer of ChannelAdvisor Corp. since June 2012.

  • Amazon to open yet another distribution center

    Amazon.com is planning to open a fifth fulfillment center in the state of Texas.

    In Texas, Amazon currently employs more than 3,500 full-time associates, has invested more than $400 million in the state and continues to grow its operations to meet customer demand. Amazon’s other Lone Star State fulfillment centers are located in Schertz, Coppell, and Haslet, with a fourth facility under construction in Dallas.

  • Gordmans shrinks Q3 loss, will open two stores

    Omaha, Neb. — Gordmans Stores Inc. was able to reduce its net loss in the third quarter of fiscal 2015 as a result of gross margin improvements. Net loss totaled $3.03 million, compared to $3.19 million the same quarter a year earlier.

    Net sales increased 2% to $143.4 million from $141 million Same-store sales dropped 1.6%, negatively impacted due to a sales tax holiday shift from July to August.

    Gordmans intends to open two additional new stores in the third quarter of 2015 and close one store later this year when the lease term expires.

    New York & Company Inc. says a stronger focus on omnichannel is helping the retailer increase traffic in its stores and sales online.

  • Hibbett Sports misses Street in Q2

    Birmingham, Ala. – Hibbett Sports Inc. missed Wall Street expectations for profit and sales in the second quarter of fiscal 2015. Net income fell 20% to $8.4 million from $7 million the same quarter the prior fiscal year.   An increase in store operating, selling and administrative expenses helped cut profit. Net sales rose 3% to $199.26 million from $193.92 million. Same-store sales dropped 1.1%.  
  • The Fresh Market is wilting under competitive pressures

    The Fresh Market is not so fresh anymore to shoppers, if the retailer's second quarter results are any indication.

    The upscale grocery chain reported that same-store sales decreased 1% for the second quarter ended July 26, and the retailer expects an even bigger decrease in the next quarter, both below analysts' estimates. 

    The company reported 36 cents EPS for the quarter, missing analysts’ estimates of 40 cents. Net income rose 53.5% to $17.5 million, while net sales increased 4.7% to $442.1 million.
