  • Target tops earnings view even after earlier increase

    MINNEAPOLIS — First quarter earnings at Target exceeded a profit forecast the company increased last month after a strong start to the quarter.

    When Children’s Wish Foundation International, an Atlanta-based charity, hosts scrapbooking or craft parties for children in the hospital, it turns to a gifts-in-kind organization and its catalog of donated merchandise for supplies. The two organizations then coordinate shipments of stuffed animals, Halloween costumes, craft materials, toys, videos and other items to hospitals to help fulfill the wishes of children in need.
     

  • Kroger honored for promoting food safety

    CINCINNATI — The International Association for Food Protection is honoring Kroger with the 2012 Black Pearl Award for advancing food safety and quality.

    The  (IAFP) names one company annually for its efforts to advance food safety and quality through consumer programs, employee relations, educational activities, adherence to standards, and support of the goals and objectives of the IAFP.

  • BDO study: 20 biggest risk factors for retailers

    New York -- General economic conditions, U.S. and foreign supplier vendor concerns, and competition/consolidation are the top three risk factors cited by retailers, according to a new study by BDO USA, LLP, a leading accounting and consulting firm. Rounding out the top five: federal, state and local regulations, and terrorism, natural disasters and geo-political events.

  • Selfridges named Best Department Store in the World

    London -- The British department store Selfridges received the “Best Department Store in the World” award at the Global Department Store Summit in Paris.

    Selfridges took the top slot amongst finalists from around the globe, including Macy's and Woolworths (South Africa). The U.K. retailer also won the award, which is given out every two years, in 2010.

  • It’s official: Liz Claiborne is now Fifth & Pacific

    New York -- Liz Claiborne Inc. said Tuesday that it has officially changed its name to Fifth & Pacific Cos., following an initial announcement in January that it would do so.

    The company sold the Liz Claiborne and Monet brands to J.C. Penney Co. in November, freeing it up to concentrate more fully on its Juicy Couture, Lucky Brand and Kate Spade labels.

  • TJX Q1 earnings up 41%, boosts FY outlook

    FRAMINGHAM, Mass. — The TJX Companies reported that net sales for the first quarter of fiscal 2013 increased 11% to $5.8 billion and consolidated comparable-store sales increased 8%. Net income for the first quarter was $419 million and diluted earnings per share were 55 cents.
