Weis Markets’ new store is energy efficient

Weis Markets is celebrating the opening of its newest location, in Martinsburg, W.V.

The 66,000-sq.-ft. supermarket includes 13 self-scan checkout lanes, including one in deli; an organic and natural foods in-store shop; expansive fresh departments; a fuel center; and curbside pick-up.

The new Weis Markets has skylights that provide natural sunlight, allowing the store to dim the ceiling lights during the day and decrease energy usage. It also has energy-efficient LED lighting in the sales area, refrigerated cases, backroom, prep areas, walk-in coolers, freezers and parking lot.

Other energy-saving and sustainable include:

•    Adaptive case controllers in every refrigerated case, cooler, and freezer to maximize refrigeration efficiency and reduce refrigeration usage;

•    Case doors that have been added to traditionally open cases in the dairy, frozen, and produce departments to minimize the air exchange between the case and sales floor, which saves energy and preserves product freshness;

•    Variable frequency drives allowing refrigeration and HVAC condenser fans to operate at fluctuating speeds rather than at full power 24/7, reducing electricity usage; and

•    Heat reclaim processes that use refrigeration system heat to generate hot water and provide heat during cold weather months.

“The Martinsburg-Hagerstown region is a strong growth area where we have steadily expanded and upgraded our stores,” said Jonathan Weis, chairman and CEO, Weis Markets. Our new store offers a tremendous range of products and strong everyday values. We are grateful for the local support for our project and look forward to serving the Martinsburg community.”

Founded in 1912, Weis Markets operates 197 stores in Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia and West Virginia.
