Wegmans Food Markets plans to open a location on New York’s Long Island.

Wegmans Food Markets is expanding its New York footprint by moving into a new region.

The grocer will open a store in Lake Grove, on New York’s Long Island. The 100,000-sq.-ft. supermarket will be located in the DSW plaza at the corner of Middle County Road and Moriches Road, near the Smith Haven Mall. The timeline for construction and opening has not yet been determined.

Wegmans has entered into an agreement to purchase 8.5 acres of the existing 28-acre plaza. Prestige Properties and Development will continue to own and operate the remainder of the plaza.  The timeline for construction and opening has not yet been determined.

The company has announced plans to open additional stores in Virginia and Delaware during the next two years. It is also on track to open a second location in Manhattan in 2023, on a site that formerly housed Kmart.

“We are delighted and proud Wegmans has chosen our DSW Plaza Shopping Center for their first location on Long Island,” said Sam Shalem, chairman and CEO of Prestige Properties & Development. “Wegmans is a first-class asset and will be an incredible addition to Lake Grove and the surrounding communities.

Wegmans currently operates 106 stores in seven states New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, Massachusetts, and North Carolina — and has more than 50,000 employees chainwide.
