Wegmans 2020 store openings on track — but with under-the-radar strategy

Wegmans

Wegmans Food Markets is continuing to open new stores — but it’s taking a more cautious approach.

The Rochester, N.Y.-based grocer remains on track to open its three previously announced locations for 2020, in Harrison, N.Y.; West Cary, N.C.; and Tysons Corner, Va. But Wegmans is not disclosing opening dates for the stores. Instead, it will provide a “targeted timeframe” in order to avoid the crowds that typically attend a Wegmans grand opening.

“While we love the excitement of opening morning, with customers anxiously awaiting to see their new Wegmans, we know this isn’t possible as the need to maintain social distancing remains,” the retailer stated. “With that in mind, we will share a targeted timeframe that the store will open. We believe this will allow us to keep our employees and customers safe, and also give us flexibility to open our doors as soon as possible.”

When open, all three stores will offer online ordering with curbside pickup and delivery, which the company encouraged shoppers to take advantage of. Wegmans also noted it will be limiting the number of customers in the store at any given time to maintain safe social distancing.

“With these measures in place, we ask for your patience and understanding, as you may need to wait in line to enter the store,” the company said.

Wegmans operates 101 stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland and Massachusetts.
