Walmart teases drive-in surprise
A mysterious Walmart tweet suggests some type of product release will accompany its drive-in movie events in August.
The tweet, released on the official Walmart Twitter account at 2:12 PM ET on Tuesday, Aug. 4, states, “Who’s ready for a surprise? We’ve got big plans to keep your family entertained. Come back tomorrow and we’ll reveal!”
The tweet also includes a photo of a forklift carrying a shrinkwrapped pallet of large cardboard boxes with the “Walmart Drive-in” logo. Affixed to the boxes are nametag-style stickers which upon zoom-in can be seen to read, “Event Date: August. Hold for WM Drive In Event.”
In July, Walmart announced it is partnering with Tribeca Enterprises to temporarily turn 160 of its U.S. store parking lots into contact-free drive-in movie theaters. Beginning in August and running through October, Walmart will roll out the drive-in experience in towns across the country for a combined 320 showings.
It is unclear what the surprise is. However, since Walmart has already publicized its plans to offer the drive-in movies, presumably there is some type of extra feature the retailer will reveal Aug. 5. There is also no indication of what is inside the boxes, or whether it is part of the surprise. Walmart has disabled comments on the tweet, removing one key channel for public speculation.
