Walmart hires 100,000 amid surging demand

Shoppers are not just stocking up on food at Walmart.

The discounter has seen a surge in demand for such do-it-yourself items as hair color, beard trimmers and sewing machines as Americans stay at home during the COVID-19 pandemic — and it’s still working to keep up with a spike in toilet paper, according to a report by CNBC. Walmart has hired more than 100,000 new employees during the past three weeks to help it keep shelves stocked and fulfill online orders, the report said.

The company announced in March that it would add some 150,000 new associates through the end of May to work in stores, clubs, distribution centers and fulfillment centers.

“We’ll easily hit the 150,000,” Walmart executive VP of corporate affairs Dan Bartlett told CNBC. “We’ll do an assessment to see if we need to do more.”
