Walmart CEO gets big platform

The chief executive of the nation’s largest retailer has taken on the chairmanship of a high-profile pro-business coalition.

Effective as of Jan.1, Walmart chief executive Doug McMillon is the new chairman of the Business Roundtable, which is made up of CEOs from large U.S. companies, reported CNBC. The group made headlines in August when it announced that shareholder value should no longer be the primary goal of a corporation and that it should instead take into account all stakeholders including employees.

McMillon’s new role could help boost Walmart’s reputation, especially with younger employees and shoppers looking to buy products from companies whose values are aligned with their own, according to CNBC. It comes after the Walmart executive has taken stances on topical issues such as wage hikes and gun sales.
