Walmart Canada opens first new store in Alberta since 2015

Walmart Canada’s new location in Edmonton, Alberta, is built for sustainability.

The 149,000 sq. ft. store, located at Kingsway Mall, has a number of sustainable features, including a transcritical CO2 refrigeration system with rejected energy being reclaimed for building heating systems, advanced building automation system for lighting and HVAC controls. It also boasts LED lighting and low-flow fixtures.

In September, Walmart Canada announced $1 billion in infrastructure investments for the year, including approximately $330 million to renovate more than 80 stores across Canada. The projects are part of Walmart Canada’s multi-year, $3.5 billion investment that it initially announced in July 2020. At the time, the retailer said it was allocating the money to make its in-store and online shopping experience simpler, faster and more convenient.

The new Walmart at Kingsway — the first Walmart Canada location to open in Alberta since 2015 — represents a more than $10 million investment in the community.

It features an expansive international section including Asian, Indian, Middle Eastern, Italian and Portuguese foods, plus a dedicated international frozen food section.

“We are bringing the best of Walmart Canada to Kingsway Mall,” said Derreck Cuschieri, VP of operations for Western Canada, Walmart Canada. “This new location has more space, more products, more services and more options for our customers. Kingsway’s close proximity to downtown Edmonton will help more people save money so they can live better. We’re proud to be investing for growth in Edmonton while creating jobs for the community.”

Walmart Canada operates more than 400 stores nationwide.
