Walgreens is continuing to expand its contactless shopping options in the face of COVID-19.
The drugstore giant now offers a curated assortment of nearly 1000 household essential and health & wellness products for same-day curbside pickup at more than 8,600 participating stores nationwide. In as little as one hour, customers can order and pay for products online and then pick them up curbside at their selected store. Walgreens initially piloted curbside pickup at select stores in Indianapolis, Chicago, and San Jose in 2011.
Eligible products include select grocery items, cleaning supplies, over-the-counter items such as cough/cold, pain/fever and immunity support, infant formula/adult nutrition, medical supplies, first aid, and paper goods.
To buy items online and pick up at curbside, customers can visit a dedicated section of the Walgreens e-commerce site and enter their ZIP code to find the nearest participating location. When a customer’s order is ready for curbside pickup, they will receive a confirmation email. When they arrive at their selected store, they tap the “I’m here” link in their confirmation email and a store associate will place orders in the trunks of cars or wherever the customer prefers, depending on their method of travel.
Stefanie Kruse, VP of digital commerce and omnichannel at Walgreens, described how Walgreens’ expansion of curbside pickup fits in with other services the retailer has launched since the pandemic began shutting down daily life for many consumers in March.
“We are always looking to provide our customers with safe, easy and convenient contactless shopping options to get the retail items they need, whether that’s via same-day delivery through our collaborations with DoorDash and Postmates, same-day pick-up with our order online pick-up at drive-thru, or now via our newest digital enhancement, order online pick-up at curbside,” said Kruse.
