SNAP/EBT payments at the regional Albertsons Companies banners of Albertsons, Safeway, Jewel-Osco and Vons, as well as at Walgreens locations nationwide and Duane Reade stores in New York, can be made via the Uber Eats app. Payments in the app are supported by USDA-approved third-party payment processor Forage.

"With this rollout, we are taking a significant step forward in ensuring that everyone has access to the fresh food they need, especially those without access to reliable transportation for whom food delivery can be a lifeline," said Hashim Amin, head of grocery and retail delivery at Uber, North America. "We believe that everyone deserves the convenience of delivery, regardless of their payment method."

To mark this initiative, EBT cardholders will receive $0 delivery fee on their first three SNAP-eligible orders, and Uber is offering EBT cardholders a three-month free trial membership in the Uber One subscription program, which includes benefits such as unlimited $0 delivery fee when they link their EBT card in the Uber Eats app.

"Albertsons Cos. is a long-standing community partner committed to helping solve food insecurity, and by working with Uber Eats, we are able to make healthy foods available to even more families in need," said Bryn Banuelos, senior director, strategic partnerships for Albertsons Cos. "We're dedicated to creating a flexible and convenient shopping experience for all customers, and we're proud to be the first retailer to accept SNAP payments through Uber Eats."

Uber says it will work to add more retailers who will accept SNAP/EBT payments on Uber Eats orders.

Rival delivery platforms Instacart and DoorDash also accept SNAP/EBT payments with a variety of retail partners including Walgreens. Albertsons previously piloted online delivery of SNAP/EBT orders and has still been providing in-store pickup for federal benefits purchases.

Uber started in 2010 and has facilitated more than 52 billion trips. As of Sept. 7, 2024, Albertsons Companies operated 2,267 retail food and drug stores across 34 states and the District of Columbia under more than 20 banners. Walgreens operates nearly 9,000 retail locations across the U.S. and Puerto Rico.
