The top shopping app is…

Amazon is number one in many categories, but not in worldwide downloads of its shopping app.

According to data from mobile data analysis firm App Annie, U.S. shopping app Wish led all mobile shopping apps by worldwide downloads in May 2020. Amazon followed at number two. The full top 10 list follows:

App Annie also recently surveyed 1,000 U.S. consumers about their smartphone shopping habits. Results indicated 59% of respondents prefer shopping on their smartphones, and the number one reason cited was that they always have their phone on them.

The survey also revealed generational differences in preference for smartphone-based shopping. Twenty-five-to-34-year-olds led all generations with 90% smartphone preference, followed by 18-to-24-year-olds (78%), 35-to-44-year-olds (70%), 45-to-54-year-olds (58%), 55-to-64-year-olds (32%), and 65-plus (18%).

In addition, App Annie analyzed growth potential for Walmart’s partnership with Shopify’s newest marketplace app, Shop, which began in June 2020. Analysis indicated 93% of Walmart’s iPhone users were exclusive to Walmart in May 2020. Conversely, 66% of Shop’s iPhone users did not use the Walmart app in May 2020.
