L.L. Bean and Uber bring summer to the city

6/20/2019
A major outdoor retailer and leading rideshare service are teaming up to ensure urban consumers don’t miss out on warm-weather fun.

Today, L.L. Bean is launching Backyard Campsite in the Battery section of New York City. Backyard Campsite is a series of one-day, pop-up outdoor events in major cities, featuring summer activities including s'more roasting, yard games, hands-on activities from L.L. Bean's Outdoor Discovery Program, and an audio experience provided by the National Park Foundation.

Through the Uber Vouchers service, which lets businesses cover the cost of customer transportation, free Uber rides will be available to deliver consumers to each site. Following today’s kickoff event in New York, L.L. Bean will host other pop-ups in Buffalo, New York; Madison, Wisconsin; and Boston, throughout June and July.

Backyard Campsite is part of L.L. Bean’s broader “S’more Out of Summer” campaign, which includes outdoor tips and suggestions available from the Amazon Alexa voice assistant and a national in-store s’more-making event on Saturday, June 22. Customers can also register to win a free backyard campout, including a tent, sleeping bags, fire pit, camping attire, and L.L. Bean experts to set it up, by sharing summer photos on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook using the hashtags #SmoreOutofSummer and #LLBeanContest19.

"At L.L. Bean, we have always believed in the benefits of the outdoors and are committed to making sure everyone has the chance to enjoy it," said Steve Smith, president and CEO of L.L. Bean. "We all have busy schedules and don't spend as much time as we'd like outside, especially in the summer. Making a s'more is the perfect way to pause and celebrate the season. It's another great way to be an outsider."
