  • Gilt.com launches activity-based loyalty program

    New York – Gilt.com is launching the Gilt Insider Program, a new free rewards program offering Gilt members the opportunity to earn points for free by interacting with the site. Activities such as making purchases, referring friends and visiting online sales earn members points they can redeem for benefits such as access to early sales, exclusive discounts, free shipping and invites to special events.

  • Study: Small retailers hit by showrooming; pump money into local economy

    Irvine, Calif. – Showrooming is not just something afflicting large retail chains. Eighty percent of small retailers also report being affected by showrooming, with 47% indicating a moderate impact, according to new data from small business software provider Sage North America.

    In addition, Sage data finds that $68 of every $100 spent at a local retailer stays in the community where it is spent, compared to only $32 out of every $100 spent at a non-local retailer.

     

  • Walgreens, Boston-area chains join CVS in Rolling Stone boycott

    Deerfield Park, Ill. – Walgreens, as well as Boston-area grocery chain Roche Bros. and convenience chain Tedeschi Stores, have indicated they will join CVS in refusing to sell the upcoming Aug. 3 issue of Rolling Stone that features a cover photo of Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. Walgreens made an announcement yesterday afternoon on Twitter, while the Boston Globe reported that Roche Bros. and Tedeschi would also decline to sell the controversial issue.

  • Rue21 and Sony Pictures Entertainment team for movie promotion

    Warrendale, Pa. -- Rue21 is partnering with Sony Pictures Entertainment to promote the release of "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.” The promotion awards a winner with two tickets to the Hollywood movie premiere; three additional winners receive movie prize packs.

    In addition, Rue21 is hosting two legs of Sony Pictures' 10-market mall tour where fans can see the stars of the film, Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower. Rue21 is hosting the events at the Chicago Ridge Mall (Chicago) and Franklin Mills Mall (Philadelphia).

  • Ferrandino & Son names sales/marketing exec

    Farmingdale, N.Y. -- General contractor Ferrandino & Son has hired Ryan Sklar as VP sales and marketing, effective immediately.
     
    Sklar has served in senior sales executive positions with Nautica and Tommy Hilfiger, and spent nine years as VP operations at Capital Contractors.
     

     

  • Crocs counts customer traffic

    Chicago – Crocs Inc. has selected ShopperTrak to provide retail traffic counting and analytics in store locations worldwide. In November 2012, Crocs started using a managed service from ShopperTrak at more than 170 stores. It completed a global rollout in spring 2013.

    Kansas City -- A new study of the millennial generation shows that many 25- to 34-year-old shoppers change their purchasing habits and behaviors after they start their families.

  • Office Depot rolls out omni-channel initiatives

    Boca Raton, Fla. -- As part of its plan to support a customer-focused omni-channel experience, Office Depot said that, effective July 28, its associates will be enabled with mobile hand-held devices across all stores to provide instant access to extended product information, availability, customer reviews and on-the-spot checkout from anywhere in the store.
